bow buildalong manual

#1 Post by archangel » Thu Oct 27, 2005 5:01 pm

Just wanted to publicly thank Jeff and Erron for their permission supplied as below. I have been able to put together a training manual for my students using the photos and comments Jeff's Bamboo Bow Build-along featured on Ozbow a while back. The result has been exactly what I wanted. Some of the pages laminated and bound, feature below.

I have this available on Word doc file if anyone is interested. I would be happy to forward but I think the attachment would be quite large. Hope to feature results from the workshops and some comments from students within the next few weeks.

Archangle
Words fail me with your effort and for getting your students involved in this grand bow building adventure
Can we get them on OZBOW sometime with their efforts ???

I think this is GREAT there has to be more of this !!!
And if possible I would love a copy will pm my email (broadband)
I would also be interested to see what your students will do with this new skill and if they will follow it on even if it is only in their spare time in their adulthood
Well Done

Looks like you have done an excellent job of putting the manual together. Congrats from me also for taking the time to pass on some of our Traditional skills to your students. It will be good to see some photos if some of them make bows.

It would be great if some of them continue on with Trad Bowhunting/Archery - continuing on because you made the effort to show them.

Passing on 'Our Heritage'

Thanks mate.

attachment problems

#7 Post by archangel » Fri Oct 28, 2005 10:25 am

I am having difficulty sending the Word file (1.17mB) as an attachment - it is too big to go through our site. Any advice - should I try Winzip? Aletrnatively I can send it via my personal email but will need contact addresses.

archangel,
If you zip it and send it to me i can convert it to Adobe .pdf format then send it back for distribution. (I have a feeling you are going to be forwarding a lot of copies on :D )
.pdf usually reduces the size a fair bit.
I've sent you a PM with my email address if you want to try that.

Great job by the way.

Either everyone who wants it should give you their emails, or if Erron thinks that his bandwidth is heroic enough, maybe he could make it available for download off the main page or something?

PDF's also stop people from tampering with it, like putting their own name on it, changing it for redistribution and that kinda thing. I was gonna offer the same service, but NCarcher beat nme to it!

Dave, yeah I can give it a whirl, as long as the .pdf file brings it down a fair bit in size.

Archangel, if you d decide to pdf it, and it turns out okay, let me know if you want it posted here for download.

cheers,

Replies have been sent to those who sent me a PM. Some suggestions to improve or add anything I missed would be handy.

All done, you should get next time you open your email. I did not have time to set up Adobe - thanks for the offer. If Erron can get it onto the site, it will be accessible to all (and save me lots of emails).

It had my email address in the email. If you are too busy, it is OK though, I will eagerly await the ability to download it from the website.

Thanks Dave, got the copy.
I put it into .pdf, on minimum file size setting but it didn't reduce it much at all. Too many photos to reduce it i think. Even winzip didn't reduce it.
Anyway i've sent you a .pdf copy via email.

Erron the file is still around 1 meg so still too big to host i pressume.

Thanks for that, Tony. If you or Archangel can send me a copy I'll see what I can do. It is too big for the campfires, but maybe on the front page as someone mentioned...

Great job on the manual Archangel. Its a fantastic reference source for those wanting to take on a project to build their own bow. Thank you for putting it together. Its wonderful to see you promoting traditional archery with your students.

Happy shooting :)

I think you might have some of the acacias, some of which do make reasonable bows if I'm right

Yeoman these are some of the wood I can get....

Beech
Honne
Marindi
Sal (Shorea Robusta) - Red, White and Gum Sal
Teak (Tectona grandis)
Silver oak. (Grevillea robusta):
Rubber Wood (Hevea brasiliensis):
Neem (Azadirachta Indica)
Jaman (Syzygium)
Mango Planks (Mangifera)
Jackfruit/ Kathal (Artocarpus heterophyllus)

Bob, I don't know this wood/tree (acacia) but I will try and find out....

I bought a thin piece of Beech wood and made a small bow just to try the wood and it seemed good.... but I didn't do a wood test as I didn't know at the time how to do it...but thanks to you Yeoman (I read the Maths and Bow making thread its an excellent source of information) I think I can do it now so when I go home on leave in about 2 weeks I'll try and get some data on the Red Sal board that I have and also on some beech wood.
