Heavy Single Bevel Broadheads

#1 Post by Ian Turner » Tue Jan 02, 2018 9:23 am

Hi all FYI i have been looking for some heavy single bevel broadheads that dont cost an arm an a leg and i came across the VanDiemans from VanDiemans in QLD in 225gr looking at getting some particularly as the price is quite reasonable.
Just an FYI for anyone else looking for heavy heads.

Cheers

G'day Ian, I notice those heads are 1 1/4" wide but are also very short. This means they will chop rather than slice and will hinder penetration with your 40 - 45# recurve. They are fine with small soft skinned game or if shooting a compound but are far from ideal with a Trad bow IMO. With a Trad bow you are far better off with a longer narrower head as it slices and aids in penetration; again my opinion.

Hi Jeff,
I was figuring on using them on goats out of my Buffalo with 50# limbs on it at relatively short ranges; under 20m..
I have done a lot of work and found that i can now shoot 50# in short stints.
Cheers mate

Still wouldn't be my choice of broadhead even on goats. That being said Jude shot goats with her 35# longbow and that was way back before I started using heavy arrows. Enjoy your hunt mate and please take some photos and share the hunt with us all on here.

Hey Ian, was there any particular reason why you chose the single bevel over the double at all or you just want to try them. Just courious thats all. Good luck on the hunt hope you get a few.

Hi mate it would be interesting to see how they actually do perform on game.
When shot into my targets they rotate during penetration so i imagine the wound channel would be massive.
Why the heavy weight you ask? on our last trip my mate was using a 55# grizz with 200gr head and a 100gr insert and it really smashed the goat he shot with it: he likes a big FOC.
I have used my compounds to date with sucess so now i am hanging to try the curve!
Cheers

Hi Ian, I'm a big fan of heavy single bevel broadhead although I've never seen this type before. I prefer and have had great success with Outback 220gn single bevel broadheads resulting in very quick ethical kills. They have the traditional 3/1 ratio which aids in the cutting effect.

At the end of the day goats are pretty light on and I believe as long as you have a razor sharp solid broadhead and a well tuned arrow you'll be fine.

Good luck

Ian,
I've been using Grizzly broadheads for the last 10 years. They are fantastic heads but very expensive.
Lately, I've been taking the 190 Tusker Concordes and grinding my own single bevel profiles. They fly very well but haven't yet tested them on game (will do so this weekend).
I then add a 125 grain steel adapter which brings them to around 300 grains after reshaping the bevels.
I made a YouTube video on the process if you're interested.
You can order the Tusker Aztecs in a single bevel grind straight from the manufacturer, or request them to have no bevel grind at all so you can modify them as desired.
Tom.

Love your ingenuity Gazza great work.
I have 190gn Tusker concordes that were supplied as single bevel in 2014. Have 100gn steel adaptors for them, was going to use them on my NT trip but went with the Outbacks.
