Made a couple more.

#1 Post by Muz1970 » Mon Dec 14, 2015 9:37 pm

Made two more bows. The bottom is for a friend and came in at 42#@28". Has Western Woody Pear on the outside of the riser with Blackbutt and Jarrah. It has Western Red Cedar veneers. My best work so far and I'm very happy with it.

The one above it has Palm wood, Tuart and Jarrah in the riser and palm wood veneers, although the veneers split while being laminated and now has a funky look. Came in at 47#@28". It has a couple of air bubbles under the glass but I have since solved that issue when I made the Woody Pear bow above. This bow spits my arrows out beautifully and has become my favourite at 56#@31".

Got plans for two more in the near future. Sourcing some Banksia this Wednesday and can't wait to get that into a bow.

You have been a busy boy, once the bug gets you it is hard to stop wanting to make more bows.

Although the bows are deflexed off the handle are you having any issues with what appears to be fairly short fadeouts?

Hi Greybeard. Can't say I've had any issues caused by the fade outs. I didn't think they were that bad. What problems would you expect? The only problems I've had has been air pockets under the glass caused by improper fit of riser section as its difficult to shape in this design. The other problem I don't like is streaks in the clear glass, think this is out of my hands and have put it down to flaws in the glass.( please correct me if its something I'm doing). I do know that with ever bow I'm improving in my overall quality.

All my bows so far have only been of two laminations. Varying in size from 2mm out to 3mm with a 0.0025" taper which equates to 1.4mm over the 23" of limb from fade to tip for each lamination on the 62"bows. Will start making two more this weekend as I just collected some Banksia, Wandoo and Sheoak this arvo. Will attempt a bow with three laminations targeting a weight of 70lbs @31" and another around the 38lbs@31".

Cheers Muz

I was wondering if at a 31" draw was there any hint of a hinge off the end of the fade.

Clear glass has nearly always had problems but not as apparent in the UL as opposed to the ULS.

No hinging as far as I'm aware. Will keep an eye on it in future. Thanks

I've only ever ordered UL glass for my bows. Will just have to live with it

Nice work Muz, I really like the Western woody pear. Did you harvest that your self?

Hey Rob, yes I did mate. Just glued up another last night. Have used Woody Pear with Banksia as Veneers and Banksia/Jarrah and Blackbutt in riser. Very excited with this one as the Banksia is very unique. Aiming for 70# give or take for my deer trips next year starting in April but will be my seroius goto hunting bow.

Will post a few picks later on. Cheers Muz

Jeeze Muz! at 70# you'll be chasing your arrows further than the goats you shoot mate  .
Look forward to seeing the pics.

Keep up the good work,

Rob.
