Temudjin's New Bow

#1 Post by temudjin » Tue Aug 04, 2015 6:00 pm

Well, 2 years ago last May I ordered and horn and sinew bow from Lukas Novotny of Saluki Bow in the USA.

Lukas makes these bows as they were made a thousand years ago with traditional materials and glues - as a result the bow took over two years to make and arrived today. This is one really beautifully made arrow chucker!

I have attached a couple of photos for those who might be interested.

The only challenge is it takes two people to string due to the severe reflex but it sure shoots sweet.

Thanks Guys,

I'll be at Hinterland in a few weeks for their Trad Shoot and will bring it with me.

It needs to be shot often (at least a few times each week) especially in the early days to settle in and "learn how to behave".

so if the bow needs to be shot to settle in, so to speak, wouldn't it be better to let many people of different draw lengths having quite a few shots each so the bow learns to shoot for ALL draw lengths not just yours.....huh huh huh

cheers

Hey Little Arrows,

you make a very good point but of course many archers are used to shooting off a shelf and could probably not manage shooting around the handle as is required with this bow!! ha ha

Beautiful...!
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is no where as important as being able to place it in the correct spot....!

we had a sneak preview of Tom's new bow today at our usual Funday Sunday - it is very nice indeed, it wasn't strung so none of us were tempted to shoot it.
A great day was had by all. :)

cheers

What a great work of art.

What's the draw weight/length?

Can we presume that you'll be using a thumb ring and shooting from the 'off' side?

Hey Yeoman,

the bow is 45lbs and will draw to 30 inches but I am shooting split fingers - I know, I know but learning to shoot with a thumb ring just did my head in and I gave up after about three months. I am shooting from the offside though… but then I am a leftie!!

I have been trying to shoot with it everyday but the biggest challenge is it takes two people to string and I'm on my own when the kids aren't here.

When I can get it strung it shoots really sweetly though

I've read that Turks, Mongols and the like would leave their bows strung in the dry months. I can't remember where I read it though so there's no credibility in the claim, for the moment.
As long as you're shooting it when you can and not leaving it in the corner, eh?
