hickory mollegebet

Seeing as I blindly 'hacked' Daryl's post on his beautiful Mollegebet, I thought I had better start another post concerning my own efforts with one and allow Daryl free rein to receive all due praise for his expertise .The grain run out on one limb is evident in one shot hence why I have backed this bow with hessian.I have to wait for the backing to cure properly before i can finish tillering. It has only got a long string on at the moment.

Bob, from previous experience I have found that hickory can be a bit of a mixed bag, especially if the variety is unknown.

Of the following I am led to believe that Pignut is the better choice for the bowyer.

Bitternut Hickory, Mockernut Hickory, Nutmeg Hickory, Pignut Hickory, Shagbark Hickory, Shellbark Hickory, Water Hickory.

The splice should hold as you have a lot of glued surface area, hopefully the grain run off won’t create issues.

I hold stocks of pole bamboo to minimise grain problems with troublesome timber.

geez Daryl I wan't aware that there were so many types of hickory! In saying that I was sort of aware that pignut seems to be the prefered type. I have absolutely which type this is but hopefully the hemp backing might alleviate the grain runout

Couple poor shots here of the hessian backing , one limb still unpainted, the other with 'Runic' inspired pattern. Also wondering how long i should let the backing 'cure' before final tiller, it has been done with Titebond 3

I have re inforced the tips with antler Rob too as the bow will have astro flight string as only concession to modern technology.Still wondering how long I should leave the backing before putting the bow back on the tiller tree.

Mostly finished the hickory mollegebet, just needs a handle wrap, but like Daryl with his, bit disappointed with final draw weight, only a smidgeon under 40# at 28''. It's 69''NTN, 2''wide by 15 3/4'' working limbs and same length levers.Tips re enforced with antler as I'm using astroflight. Working limbs backed with hessian as there is a bit of grain run out on one limb.Quiet and smooth so guess it's ok.

Glad it worked out well for you Bob except for the draw weight.

It was mainly my fault it came in light Jeff, as i left very little 'room' in the thickness for tillering etc.Guess I was a little over confident about the outcome and when i had to do more tillering than I presumed it reduced draw weight markedly.
