BAMBOO and HICKORY.

I had an off cut of hickory that was not suitable for a selfbow so I decided to back it with bamboo to see how it would hold up.

To add to my woes the pole bamboo had developed a split and once removed left me with a shorter pole and awkward node placement.

Off cuts of Osage and black wattle from the scrap bin completed my materials list.

You may notice that the fadeouts are not symmetrical as I had to compensate for the stiff spot created by the node placement.

Unfortunately the weak spots in the hickory occurred in relatively crucial spots, one at the start of the recurve where the grain swings up to the back of the bow and the other on the fadeout.

Reducing the draw weight to 40# should increase the safety margin given by the bamboo.

Daryl.
Hi Daryl
This looks like a very nice little bow. and it has a nice shape at full draw as well.

I am curious though, it looks like the bamboo backing doesn't go under the knock tips or am I miss interpreting something?

Hi Graydon, The attached photo should explain all. In the initial glue up the bamboo runs the full length of the stave.

Hey Greybeard,

that is a very sweet looking bow! I love the curves and she looks great at full draw.

Hope to see you shooting it soon.... as long as you don't shoot too well!!

Daryl,

That certainly is a very fine bow. I think perhaps you could be rightly judged the best bowyer we have on Ozbow. Certainly, you are one of the most adventurous in your willingness and ability to have a go at the more difficult stuff.

Very well done, indeed.

I second that. He is very, very good plus he thinks his ideas through before putting saw to timber.

Bill, I did not do a build a long with this bow as the construction method involved is similar to bows in my previous posts.

The following are links to the various bows.

Today I started preparing materials for what should be an exciting project for me. If members are interested I will do a build a long.
