Gringa D/R carbon Longbow

Here's my new Gringa deflex reflex longbow, of which I got Rod to add a layer of carbon. Had it made for a trip to the NT in a few months where I hope to take a Buff with it. It has a Zebrawood riser and comes in at 82# @ 31". Gave it a quick tune this morning then went about tuning some 250 spine Widowmaker shafts for it. Ended up with a weight of 960 grains with a 25% EFOC. This bow spits these arrows out way better than expected, I'm borrowing a mates chronograph on Friday to find out just how fast it is. Any guesses????????????????

at that draw length/poundage/arrow combo it should punch them right into a buff if you do your part.

one question - behind the point on those arrows - is that some kind of strengthening/footing?
if so - what did you use and how do you go about making it?

Hey Bstan86, the arrows are Widowmaker shafts and come with an outsert rather than an insert. The outsert acts as a footing as well. They're very small diameter shafts and have a 4mm ID and are super tuff. I've used 2 x 3" HDG nails each weighing 90 grains glued in with araldite upfront to increase my FOC. I need to refine the weight set up as I had the back nail blow out on two separate arrows yesterday on release. Going into town this morning chasing some M4 booker rod. Want to try using a nut on the booker rod ground down to the shaft OD. It would then be captured between the outsert and shaft preventing any movement.

A nice curve indeed. The Zebra Wood looks very nice. With such a long power stroke it should spit an arra out really well.

cool mate - good setup and thanks for the info on how you did it.

i will have a look at the widowmaker shafts as i'll be getting a few dozen for my new Toelke Whip which arrived the other day. I'll post pics soon when i have time.

I Love it Rod, thanks for the time you put in getting it right.

Couldn't find any M4 booker rod so I settled on 3.75mm x 100mm bullet head HDG nails. They weigh in at 153 grains, so my total weight now sits at 927gn and 24.6% EFOC. It ends up being a lot cheaper at $9 for 100 nails and they fit straight in with no adjustments required plus better arrow integrity.

This photo shows the nails, the two at the bottom was my original set up that were coming loose. Now the head of the nail sits up against end of shaft and is boxed in by the outsert. The 190gn RW single bevel Concorde with 125gn adaptor will come in slightly heavier than the 300gn field point. I emailed Tusker broadheads enquiring if they could do the above broadhead arrangement. No problems at all - very good to deal with.



So I got the chronograph and results are as follows.

927gn between 170-173 fps which I'm stoked about. Also shot two lots of my GT traditional's through it. 780gn = 178-182 fps and 680gn = 189-192 fps.

So the 927gn arrows shooting at 172 fps equals 60.88 ft/lbs of KE and 0.708 ft/lbs-sec of momentum. So I'm a very happy camper.

Now I just need it to stop raining so I can go practice with it. As its only 54 days until I start to drive the 4000km up north.

I forgot - I shot my 70# bow through the chrono out of interest with the 927gn arrows and the best I got was 149 fps. So a huge improvement.......

out of interest - how far over the shaft does the outsert go?

just thinking - in terms of strength it seems like a good idea as long as there's plenty of shaft inside the outsert - in order to spread stresses over a greater amount of the foreshaft....

Outsert covers shaft 20mm. 16mm with the nail head.

Having problems with the nocks. Keep busting them. They use Bohning "F"nocks, apparently its best to upgrade to Easton "G" nocks. Manufacturer quotes on another forum that he's looking to supply them with the "G" nocks in the future.
