New Gringa Deflex Reflex long bow inside .. you were warned!

#1 Post by Nutgrass » Wed Nov 06, 2013 9:41 am

So I had the big fella make me a new bow, yer I know, how many can you have.... well my answer is as many as I like alright !!!

My red belly black stick (Slight reflex) has been my turn to stick for big pigs, it's 60# & has never let me down. The mistress (deflex reflex) is a favorite, at 53# has nailed more than her fair share of game with out a question of a doubt, but I have always been a little apprehensive to take her up against the big boars, any well placed arrow from a 53# bow will do the job, but there are other factors when the big boars turn up that work against you. And after our trip out west at the end of last year I was thinking even more that 60# for the big boars was a minimum. My last boar of that trip was a corker to say the least, but he had fight pads on him like I had never seen before, they were the thickest & covered so much of his vitals that I have ever seen.
I hit that boar from under 10 meters with a 750 grain Douglas fir shaft, tipped with a razor sharp 190 grain ribtek, launched from the 60# red belly black stick, he was slightly quartering away & i hit him as sweet as you like. But after all was said & done, the penetration from his far side was minimal. So at the time I under went a bit of an Autopsy for my own interests & my conclusions were......
He was one hell of a pig .......... No in all seriousness, He was a big hairy bugger, covered in thick dry mud, his battle armor was very thick & covered more down the side of him than I had ever seen. The fact the arrow busted through fight pads on both sides I was happy I'd decided to take the 60# Red Belly that day. As the arrow passed through it pierced both lungs & nicked an artery on top of the heart. So he was as good as dead regardless if my arrow came out the other side or not. But seeing we were in fairly open grounds, it wasn't hard to find him. But that said, I tracked him like I had no idea where he was.
There was barely a drop of blood !!!! He had almost completely bleed out internally. Only spilling blood in his final resting place. Now If I would have been 500 meters closer to the scrub I would have been flat finding him. If he hit that thick stuff with out dropping an ounce of blood, it would have been grid searches on egg shells looking him in the thick scrub.
So when I went to see Rod with my new order & he calmed down (He really loves making me those deflex reflex longbows) The plan was 60-65# Using some blue dymond wood I had ordered over that was the wrong colour for it's intended project (it was suppose to be purple, if you get the right light from the right direction it can almost look purple) lol.

Anyway, that is the reasoning behind another bow....... I've only had a chance to shoot it a couple of times, it is very smooth for 63#, I was expecting it to be rough on my dodgy shoulder, but it draws smooth as you like & it flings them hard & fast down the range..... To say I can't wait to get out & blood it is an understatement, but that will probably have to wait until next year.

Here are some pics !!!

Seems like an awful lot of excuses to justify getting a new bow Nutty. Congrats mate and it looks good.

Y'know, I'm not usually a fan of engineered woods, but this time it came out sweet. Looks great, does it have enough weight to make a noticeable difference to hand shock? Gotta make a plan Bud, even if it's months away I wanna be there when you blood it! Might even have me own Gringa D/R by then to blood with ya.

Top bow as always, looks great, I wasn't a real fan of it either Nephew, "until" I built a bow out of it, now I am probably one of it's biggest fans.

That is indeed a beautiful looking bow, all the curves sit very well together. The grip shape looks a bit unusual, sort of concave? How does it sit in the hand at full draw?

I find it's very comfy mate, although it is shaped the same as it's lighter sister ("The Mistress") so I guess I'm use to it. But from others who have shot the mistress there has been no ill reports.

Hey Rod,

I absolutely love the look of the dished riser (and I love the camo wood) but are to able to do the riser with more of a locator grip?

Cheers

Thanks Rod,

Very good to know.

From picture #5 it looks like it probably would qualify for IFAA. Maybe? I think minimum length is 64 inches.

Anyone have an opinion on that?

I know Rod that that is not a focus for your bows but nice to know.

Cheers

Great!!!! I want one

Do you think it could be made/delivered by end of June ish?

Just though I'm heading north in Sept for a 6 week trip and will need to tune a heap of arrows. Plus practice with it heaps.

Send me your details and I'll ring you and get the ball rolling.

Cheers Muz
