One for a friend

#1 Post by Flatliner » Tue Oct 29, 2013 7:41 pm

Here's one I made recently for a good friend of mine so he and his boys can fling a few around. He went for the gloss finish cause it wont be hunted with.
I'll be paid for it with an industrial grade thicknesser with a 600 wide bed,,, should make life a little easier.

It's a fully upgraded 62" Flatline MC2, with two sets of limbs, one set at 43 # and one set at 38 #.

Timbers are: Riser; QLD Walnut/Lacy She Oak with a Conkerberry/Miva Mahogany leaf and Silver Ash veneers.
Limbs: 43# set; Belly; QLD Walnut. Back; Red Tulip Oak.
38# set; Belly; Lacy She Oak, Back; Blush Tulip Oak.

Overlays are a combo of the above timbers.

Hey Sean you are too nice, but the thicknesser was just siting in his shed doing nothing and the bow is worth twice as much.

Bob, the Lacy She Oak is left over from another bow I made for Chris AKA Slvrslingr on the forum. I agree great wood, though a little difficult to work some times (tends to scorch a bit), must get some more.

Thanks Steve, it takes a lot of thought and care in the milling to get the Tulip Oak to look like that but it's well worth it for the result.

Thanks again, Rob.

Fellas, I was lucky enough to see this bow first hand last week while we were visiting the far north. It looks good in the photos but believe me, it is breathtaking in the flesh 8) . Rob certainly has skill for making fine bows.

Rob was kind enough to share some of his knowledge with me as well, which is very appreciated  . Thanks Rob. If I wasn't up to my ears in work I'd be making a bow or two right now. I hope the enthusiasm (and memory) lasts until this current job is over  .

Cheers..... Rod

Nice work mate, I have said it before and I can say it with confidence again, my Flatline bow is my first reach for each and every time without fail.

That is some beautiful work and wood there mate!!

Hey Rod, How's your head ? I take it you got the contract you were talking about. Don't work to hard Mate.

What are you implying Graydon,,,?? that I'm a subversive bowyer or something 8) ,, don't worry mate I sneak plenty of bows past you, everyone would get a bit tired of looking at them if I posted them all, I only put them up if they are a little special.

Cheers Rob.

Wow! That is a really beautiful, and beautifully made bow, showcasing fine Aussie timbers and craftsmanship. You really have an eye for combining timbers, decoration, and detail.

"ART" that I cannot fault! 8)

I don't reckon Rob would forgive the recipient if they mounted it on a wall. He told me, when I got mine, if I remember correctly "It should earn the respect of the Australian Bush" I can only assume from that , if it doesn't get a hunt or regular use at a target of some kind wouldn't do it justice.

Personally in hind sight of that statement I wouldn't like to see it demoted to a show pony, it needs to be worked to earn its respect for all that effort.
