Not always. A selfbow is one which is made entirely of wood. So, you can have a longbow that's got laminations, and it woudn't be a selfbow, or you could make a short recurve selfbow, and it wouldn't be a longbow. If the bow be made of wood, it be a selfbow.

I thought a selfbow was made from the one piece of wood, i.e. no laminations?

:?

Yeah, that's right, selfbows are wood, but a longbow can of course be made of laminations, ie: fibreglass&carbon etc. This is a kinda confusing subject to discuss, huh?

A self bow is a bow which is made from a single piece of timber, a stave, or from two shorter pieces, called billets, which are joined at the handle.

A self bow can be a longbow where the depth of the limb is 5/8 the width (an English longbow), a flatbow, a deflex/reflex bow or a recurve bow.

A laminated bow is one which is made from several layers of material such as wood, glass, carbon, syntactic foam, sinew, horn, bamboo, silk, linen, hemp.

Virtually any type of bow can be of laminated construction, including compound or wheelie bows.
