black wattle ident.

#1 Post by bigbob » Thu Jul 26, 2012 9:31 am

Ok here's some shots of different timber , both supposed to be black wattle. any one know which one is 'right? the first 2 shots are of one piece, and the second is the other. They appear to have different bark patterns. The cut ends are somewhat similar, although there is only a shot of the larger logs end.

The bark in the last photo is what I know as Wattle in this neck of the woods but what variety it actually is I can't say.

Thanks Jeff. The first shot came from a property near Conondale where the guy has been on the land for eons and he identified IT as black wattle. This is where it all is fuzzy, bit like fish names. Same fish different names in different locations., or different fish , same names. Second shot came from Caboolture area.I would be sure they are both wattle but which one is THE black wattle?

Damn    Knew this topic would get some varied answers. All to do with names specific to localities methinks. Proof will be in the pudding once they have seasoned I guess. Please don't feel that I am under valuing anyone's imput, simply that I believe there are a few types all going by the generic term 'black wattle'

That is certainly the case Bob, the same with many of our woods. Any wattle I have seen has rather nice grain but it can be difficult to get good solid pieces. To identify which type you have you would need photos of the bark, leaves and possibly the flowers and do some searching to find the correct botanical name.

Bob,

The following link contains a lot of information and photographs. Having a search by state function is handy.

be worth reaching out to Alan Camp from Awaba, he has done a lot of research on acacias and their properties. I remember him working with the legendary Mutherinbah from near Coonabarabran.

Just checked a couple online forestry sites out and they show Acacia melanoxylon or black wattle , Sally wattle, blackwood etc.curious thing is they show some different images of trees with close resemblance to both bark types I have posted. Both were identified as Melanoxylon.

'fraid not, only received the cut logs as such and didn't see the tree in person.

Over the years I've come across over a dozen different species that were known locally as Black Wattle , all were different , although what was known Black wattle around the Caboolture is also known as Black wattle around here at Miriam Vale but to confuse it a little more some of the locals know it as some thing else , but most seem to agree on the name Black wattle

What was called Black Wattle around the Clermont are was as different as chalk and cheese

Thanks David, that pretty well confirms what I've come to realise.Same names for different wattle in various areas. Without leaf and flower characteristics, it is almost impossible to make a definitive statement., given that some websites had photos of both the bark types I posted each listed as melanoxlon on the same page. Perhaps the bark may alter with age and dimensions.
