Latest new bow

#1 Post by bigbob » Sat May 19, 2012 5:38 pm

Thought I would post a few shots of a bow I just finished for my non shooting daughter [ hoping to con her into getting back into it] not the best of photos but might get a couple more tomorrow as I had to rush these. The second bow is the 'boo cored , osage bellied bow with wenge riser I made for a friend. Had to do some more work as I delivered it to his place, left leaning against a roller door[!] Had to do some serious trapping to get the damage out and lost 2# in the process. My daughters bow has the mystery wood riser[ one I posted about before, but looks like PNG walnut to me] beautiful stuff.and has natural boo core with one coffee for contrast and belly lams of Zebrano. It is 66 NTN and came out smack on the money at 30# @ 27'' Has a modest osage inlay on the bottom limb.'Tis a pretty bow, methinks. First shot will tell that I am starting to hate Wenge, as the porous grain is a real b@#%* to fill.

Lookin' real good, Bob. I like the swell in the handle of your daughters bow. Good looking timber, that mystery wood!

Thanks for the kind words gents. That swell Mor-- Nephew is a new for me handle grip that i actually like as the swell fits into the 'cup' of the palm and makes an instant locator, providing of course that its matched to the individuals hand. I nearly cry each time I use a bit of the 'mystery' timber as I cant help thinking of the huge load we sent to the dump to be mulched. It was only the sheer weight of a piece as we were loading the last trailer load that swayed me to take two puny 'log's about 2ft long home to speculate. There were some 2m or more long and more than 45cm in diameter. AGGGHHH! One extra shot of the nocks on the 'newie'

I reckon you're right Bob, that definitely looks like PNG walnut to me, sad to hear so much went to the dump, it's very difficult to find even in my neck of the woods. You are lucky to find a heavy piece cause it's extremely variable in density and a lot of it is quite soft and light weight.
Very nice work on both bows, you should be proud, surely your daughter wont be able to resist the urge when she has it in her hands.
Great stuff Bob.

Cheers, Rob.

Great to hear from you Rob, I saw a bow on a US website and it had PNG Walnut and that's when the light bulb came on for me.I can not recover from the thought that we sent a bloody great tree about 7m tall to the great wood chipper in the sky. Are you aware that your 'great storm ' build along is posted on a US site? Good publicity for you , a comments about how involved it was.Hope you are still finessing some new works of art.

What a coincidence Rod, that will be great. I have been waiting to see how you went with the 'curve, so I will be able to see it in the 'flesh'.

Thanks Jeffro, got another one to make now that someone wants similar, which has put the daughters nose out of joint a bit, but i told her it will be a bit different so hers is still unique!

Very nice Bob, I like the PNG Rose walnut. Is that the stuff you had a chunk of or did you purchase it?

Why thank you Grahame, I do appreciate that. Steve the 'walnut ' is from the small piece of tree I salvaged after most went to the dump. Re the wenge I have found that one way of filling the pores [ Reworked those tips and forgot to fill again] is to liberally smear CA aka superglue over it and sand back . Even then it may require more than one application. Love its appeal, hate the porous nature.

Seeing as we're posting pics of bows, here's my custom Fox Triple Crown which arrived from Oregon earlier this year after a six month wait. Smoothest shooting, most comfortable longbow I've ever picked up. Zero hand shock or stack.

I didn't make it. But I did make the arrows. Sorry it's not a great shot. iPhone job.

The Fox Triple Crown is 66". Possibly looks short because it's a very long, deep riser section. Here's a crap screen grab from a video of it.
