Left-handed shooter - what size longbow would suit me best?
G'day,
I started shooting compound again after a long break & I'm intrigued by longbows/take-down recurve & would like to give them a go.
I'm shooting Left-handed about 50lbs at 29-ish inch draw length. Given the high let-off on my compound, I'm thinking maybe a 40-45 pound max bow would be the go, but I wouldn't know how to size the limbs/bow length, or anything much at all about this style of archery.
I shot a little bit of recurve to begin with, so the split finger(??) (one over, two under) method of drawing the bow is familiar.
Having lived on 2-minute noodles for a while to fund my compound, I don't really have the $$ for anything super-custom-exxy.
My goal is to improve my form and feel for archery overall. Most if not all of my shooting is going to be target & maybe field.
If I had the $$$$ I would just order a Steve Jawerth Wedgetail, or buy a Hoyt Gamemaster or similar.
Right now, something that gives good bang for the buck is what I'm after.
Advice would be much appreciated
Gundy knows me from other forums, btw...

A long draw length usually goes better with a longer bow 62" would be good in a recurve.
You can pick up some good ones on ebay us from time to time
45 to 50 # would be good but anymore and you probably will struggle for a while. The lighter the poundage the easier to shoot it.

At your draw length for a longbow [not deflex/reflex] I would suggest 68" plus.
Daryl.

A custom-made Howard Hill longbow is very affordable. It will be about just under AU$700 delivered to you. I would recommend a 70" longbow.

Since your budget is tight and you really aren't sure what you want perhaps a good starter bow would be a Samick longbow or similar. If your draw length is 29" with a compound it is probably only around 27 - 28" with a longbow. Perhaps have a talk with John McDonald (jcm) about a starter bow; see this link - http://www.ozbow.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=4927 - or one of the other suppliers on the front page of the site.

I seem to remember some time ago there was a little write up about the Bodnik Little stick longbow. Apparently a sweet shooter & only $245ish US from Kustom king archery?
Pete Ward also gave it a pretty good review. I know they are a shorter at 58" but apparenlty they easily draw out to 28.
I'm considering one for my first Longbow experience in the coming future.

The trouble is they are a short bow and not a long bow let alone a longbow.mephisto666 wrote:I know they are a shorter at 58" but apparenlty they easily draw out to 28.

I'll be sure to ask Kustom King to add that to the product description - "Bodnik Little stick Longbow, its a short bow, not a long bow & definately not a Longbow!"

Would it be a longbow for a very short person, if it wasn't a short semi-recurve?

If it had straight limbs it'd be a longbow for a person of short stature Rod but it doesn't so not a longbow.rodlonq wrote:Would it be a longbow for a very short person, if it wasn't a short semi-recurve?
