First Takedown R/D Bow
So I've made my first takedown R/D Bow. Its 62" and came in at 69lbs@31" so far. Got a bit fancy with the veneers as I wanted something to help break up the bows outline when hunting. The veneers are Blue gum, Jarrah and Sheoak. The riser is Western Woody Pear, Tuart And Jarrah With 2 bits of Glass for strength. Its made to fit into an arrow case for my next interstate trip on the plane. Used 2 bamboo laminations at 129thou each, venners are 23thou each with 40thou glass. Its about 58lbs@28".
Used Big Jims vids/technique with the fiberglass socket. Didn't use the locator holes but instead made a wider jig and supported the uncut trued limbs. Was also my first attempt at any sort of fiberglassing. Used hair spray to stop the glass sticking to the tannin when making the socket. Due to the low temps here at the moment I had to put the bow in the oven to get the resin to go off. I found it was still tacky after 18hours, so 1 hour at 70deg did the trick.
Was a bit worried about the veneer alingment with the shaped limbs but it all worked out ok.
Still have to sort out the tips and then all the fine grit sanding to do.
Couldn't wait, had a couple of shots and it spits the arrows out nicely...Happy camper

Man! that is looking great Muz! Your one up on me now as I have yet to make a 2 piece. Did you do the chevrons on the limbs or buy ready made veneers? They look schmick!

very nice, how thick are they mate?
Re: First Takedown R/D Bow
Nice I hope to be doing that sort of thing one day.
may your arrows fly straight and true and your limbs return.
Re: First Takedown R/D Bow
The veneers were about 13mm when the pieces are all glued together. Then I turn it on the its side and put through the bandsaw. They were then put through the drum sander until they were 0.6mm / 23thou.
Next thing is to work out how to do the leather grip having never done that either. More research
I worked out that my gap on the form was to big (32mm) and was causing the blemishes / air pockets under the glass. So I glued 3 laminations to my form making my gap now 25mm. I couldn't help myself so I tapered them all at 003thou/inch. So in turn my bows now have another 12mm or so of reflex in them. Will be interesting to compare my 66" 70lb bow to this one.

Re: First Takedown R/D Bow
I needed to source some leather for the grip and I was lucky enough to score a $5 leather couch of Bidding wars on Facebook. Was going to strip the whole thing of leather but have just removed the back section for the moment.
Have cut out and stitched leather grip to bow. First time for me doing this and happy with the result.
Have also cut out foam for arrow case and fitted bow. Just need to write on bottom limb and she's all finished

Very, very nice mate.
Re: First Takedown R/D Bow
Great result Murray, the 2 piece tenon and socket look very sturdy. Glad to see you pulled it off with a top result. I have had the gear to make a 2 piece take down for about 3 years and haven't had the fortitude to cut a bow in half. It must have been especially difficult to cut that beauty in half, those chevron veneers came up extra special. Congratulations on a great result all round.
Re: First Takedown R/D Bow
Yes a gutsy move to cut that work of art in half!
Re: First Takedown R/D Bow
Exceptional work Muz. Making pretty bows is a great lesson in delayed gratification, and there must have been a serious delay in that one. Well done .

Cheers guys, now to plan the next one. Maybe a 40 pounder
Re: First Takedown R/D Bow
That's a mighty effort there Muz. I've got one of Big Jims Thunderchild in takedown and love it, very handy for transportation.

Cheers Memo, the bow is a great performer and I love the simplicity of the T/D socket.
