Rawhide Knife Sheath
Some of you Folks have seen this Knife before, I did not like the Sheath I made for it, just did not seem right so I decided to try my Hand at making a Rawhide Sheath
I havn't used Rawhide to make Knife Sheaths before. I chose to use Kangaroo Rawhide. It is made with the Rawhide laminated over a piece of Split Vegie Tanned Leather.
I trimmed the Rawhide so it was slightly oversise in comparision to the Split hide so that when I Stitched it it would form a smooth Seam. I used Waxed Nylon Thread and a Mexican Loop Stitch. This Stitch is normally done with Leather Lace and covers the edge completely. I used it with the Thread as it forms a Basket Weave Pattern which encircles the Edge and holds it Flat
The Sheath is a lot smoother than it appears in the Photo's. I sanded it down to 240 Grit Sandpaper and then Buffed it with 0000 Steel Wool. It is finished with a standard Leather Sealer inside and out, then I buffed it again with Steel Wool and Vegetable Oil
Now that it's Dry it is Armour Hard. The Sheath was made from a Pattern and fits this Knife like a Glove. It is very secure. This Sheath has a few Design issues, mainly me not being familiar with working with Rawhide to make Sheaths. I learned plenty making this Sheath and will make another now that I have nutted out the Pitfalls
regards Jacko
