Bino Harness?

#1 Post by Stickbow Hunter » Fri Apr 28, 2006 8:16 pm

In one of the threads about binoculars Tuffcity mentioned he used a "bino-buddy" system for holding his binos in place.

Does anyone else use or have used them? If so can you tell me what you think of them and where you got them from? Also how do they work, is it a harness that you have to wear around your body?

Thanks for any info you can give.

G'day Pat,

Gee, that was quick, thanks. I will take a look and may get back to you.

Anyone else use them or similar?

G'day Jeff

I've thought about buying a harness, more so after all the hype about how good they are. I thought I was missing out of something, but are some careful reconsidering, I don't think I need one.

I carry my binoculars across my shoulders so they hang down under my right armpit. I keep the strap short. They ride like this very comfortably yet they are ready at a moments notice to use. The strap on my binoculars is nice and wide at the top and it's made of neoprene, so it doesn't dig in. Then again my bino's are only 8x32's and not particularly bulky or heavy.

I've just bought a padded camo binocular case on ebay. I paid $20 for it. It will fit my bino's like a glove. It slips on over your belt. I thought this case would be ideal for those times when I want to have my bino's around, but not particularly right there and then. I would probably carry it in the middle of my back, like a bumbag, so it won't get in the way. It should protect it from most knocks and bumps too.

Sorry mate, I'm not being much help here with your question. I'm curious to know your reasons for thinking why you'd like a harness. :? :D

mick i can say one feature is when u crawl, they wont slide down and get in ur way..they keep em snug and handy..

doesnt get in way of shooting.

some clip on a hook on the belt, these can fall all when crawling a swell

but as with anything, what ever suits u and makes u happy..

i know they work for me..

cheers pat :D

I have one also it cost me 25 bucks and won't go out without it,
I find it to be fantastic, your binos don't swing about there instantly at the ready for use so movement is minimised. Only thing to watch if hunting in wet weather rain will get on the eye piece so I use the eye releif covers

Fair enough fellas, but I'm still not sold on the idea. When I carry my binoculars across my chest (so they ride under my right armpit), they are out of the way, don't restrict shooting, don't wobble and are ready at a moments notice. I can't see much advantage in a harness. Even when crawling, I imagine that I could just swing my bino's around so they ride on my back. I don't do much crawling though, except to the missus.

On Monday (my Monday :D ) I'll post a pic of what my carrier looks like, I don't have a hook up at home for my work digital camera.

I've got mine attached to pair of 7X42 Zeiss and find it very comfortable and convenient to use. The bino's are always handy and if you need to sneak a peek in tight or close quarters you can keep movement to a minimum.

Thanks for the info fellas.

Pat, which harness do you use out of that lot?

Mick, I also shorten my bino strap up and have them sitting under my arm. I however find that they do tend to drop down under me when crawling in close to game and this annoys me.

Piggy what brand are yours and have you got a photo? Also where did you buy them?

Tuffcity, that would be great to see a photo of yours. What make is yours?

Jeff,

Mine isn't a commercial brand. It was in with the the joining package at NALS (North American Longbow Safari) a couple of years ago and I think someone locally made them all.

I took a look at that link to and had a laugh as well.

Pat, I saw the Cabelas one the first time you posted the link but as you say something has happened and it is now gone. I think it looked about the best from memery.

Thanks Tuffcity. I always wanted to attend one of the NALS. It was because of them that I started our Australian Longbow Musters up back in 1988. Dave Richardson from Canada sent me photos and told me how they started the NALS. Getting side tracked a bit but it was because of a write up about the NALS (the first one I think) that I decided to shoot a longbow back in 1983-4. So glad I did. :D

Do any of you wear a Camelbak over the top of these harnesses or how do you wear both and is there any interference when wearing both?

Sorry for all the questions but I like to find these things out before spending money as dollars are hard to come by. :D

Stickbow I also wear a camelback over the bino harness and have no problems with them at all I will post a pic of mine later they are made by I think Dave pender. As far as using conventional bino straps I personally had heaps of trouble with them swinging around me and on those sliding stalks after deer, I just had to remove them for the stalks but then didn't have them when I wanted a quick check to see what the deer are doing
As you know when deer hunting all movement should be kept to a minimum and a pair of moving bino's swinging around your neck is just another thing you have watch. I would rather be woring about the deer than have to use some of my attention on the binos hanging from my neck and worring if they are going to move.
I think it also depends on what game you hunt as some species you can get away with a lot more movement.

Just my two cents worth :D

I think all that flour sniffing, while you were baking, has done something weird to your brain, or was it that strange herb you were putting in your stir fry at Nth Albert ?

Thanks for that Timbo. I think I might give one of those a try. Have you tried either?

I was kinda leaning toward the 'Alpen' one from Canga Archey. What one do you blokes think would be the best. They don't give much info about them.

Hi Jeff
I saw these in Bass Pro, may give your binoculars more protection when going hunting. Ross
