COWARDLY killers armed with bows and arrows have shot two kangaroos at Yarrambat Park golf course.
The animals were found with the arrows still in their bodies by golfers yesterday morning.
A female with a joey had been shot in the rump and was saved, but a male shot in the stomach was destroyed.
Wildlife rescuer Narelle Smith said she was sickened by such senseless cruelty. She received a call from the club, 30km northeast of the city, yesterday morning and attended with a vet.
"We had to tranquillise them before we could treat them," she said.
Greg Boland, the RSPCA inspectorate services manager, said it was a "disgusting act".
"It is aggravated cruelty, which can bring two years in prison or fines of $24,000," he said. "These animals would have been in a lot of pain.
"Anyone who is capable of doing this to a defenceless animal could be capable of acts of violence towards people as well."
It is not the first act of cruelty at the Yarrambat Park golf course. In 2005, a dozen kangaroos were found decapitated.
Nillumbik Shire Mayor Bo Bendtsen said the council would work with police to find the callous and cruel attackers.
There is a $1000 reward for information leading to prosecution. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
IF ANY ONE KNOWS WHO THIS COULD BE PLEASE CALL CRIME STOPPERS ON THE ABOVE NUMBER. THE VERY LAST THING WE NEED IS SOME KNUCKLE HEAD GIVING ARCHERY A BAD NAME.

Just had a look on archery forum and Marcus confirms it is a cross bow bolt of poor quality and field point to boot. So the animals would have suffered.
These roos are tame and are much loved by visitors and club members alike at both the archery club and golf club.
