the incumbent governor of new jersey did indeed sign legisation that took affect jan 1, 2004 that will prohibit the sale of any handgun without "smart gun" technology as soon as it becomes available ANYWHERE in the United States.
the same legislature also decreed that the "STATE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE EVEN THOUGH AN INJURY OR DEATH RESULTS FROM FAILURE OF "SMART GUN" TECHNOLOGY."
in other words, the citizen who abides by this "law" is at the mercy of a technology that is far from perfected. Law enforcement here will have nothing to do with "smart gun" technology as it's NOT RELIABLE as of yet.

i say again: keep an eye on your legislators!
