Members may be interested to know that Brett Parker a SSAA Member is
undertaking a PHD at the University of Melbourne and is conducting
research into the feeding ecology of Sambar and Fallow Deer.
The study is being conducted through the School of Forest and
Ecosystem Science at the University of Melbourne and will be
undertaken in north-eastern Victoria on the Blue Range Plantation and
State Forest, and the Delatite Arm Plantation and adjoining State Forest.
An initial sampling trial will be conducted during December 2004
and February 2005. Ten sambar and ten fallow deer will be shot and
collected under permit by scientists and samples obtained from the stomach and related organs.
How Can You Help? People who wish to be involved with this project
can assist with record keeping and labelling samples, and accompany
researchers into the field. Given the nature of the work and permit
conditions, volunteers will not be able to harvest animals. Vet
students or similar may be interested in assisting in dissecting
samples as well as deer hunters keen to learn more about the animals.
If you are interested contact the School of Forestry and Ecosystem Science by telephoning 03 5321 4300.
A Public meeting and information session is to be held at the Gough's
Bay Sailing Club, Bayside Boulevard Gough's Bay, on Monday 15th
November, 7:00-9:00 pm, to provide a forum for interested parties to
learn more about this research.

This would be a great opertunity to get edumicated on the deer habits and areas they live in. If I was over that way I'd be in for the trip even though I couldn't take a shot, the knowledge and experience gained would be priceless for future hunts.
