Group Hunt

#1 Post by piggy » Tue Jun 02, 2009 7:30 pm

I am thinking of putting together a 2010 group hunt in the Victorian high country to give members the opportunity to have a go at hunting Sambar deer. I am looking at locations in one of the national parks that permits deer hunting (no dogs allowed) and has good deer numbers about. (I intend to visit the area and check it out first)

I would like to know if people would be interested in such a hunt that would run for a week or so and camp would be accessible via vehicle but you must be self sufficient and could use main camp as a base camp for overnight trips if interested.

As I said I am just considering it to give members the opportunity to have a go at hunting Sambar deer.

Cheers

Great idea Piggy. 8) It's been too long since our last one. Our 2005 hunt was only for a long weekend and that wasn't really long enough. If we organised it so that it ran for a full week plus another weekend, people could turn up for one weekend or both weekends or for the whole 9 days.

If you organise the dates early enough, blokes like me would be able to allocate their annual leave or furlough to suit. Personally, I need to know dates by November for the following year's leave.

It's hard to find a suitable area. You will need a spot that has good access, as some people won't have 4WDs. It also needs to be somewhere that's not too crowded. It would be great if there was a good population of sambar there too. :D

We could set off either individually or in small groups to hunt the surrounding countryside and then return to the camp to recount our experiences around the campfire. It sounds fantastic!

There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.

Great idea Paul, never been on a group hunt, infact I generally avoid that large group type thing ,(no Matt Johns comments) but i have met a few of the blokes on here and they seem a pretty cool bunch of dudes, so I'm a starter at this stage work and family permitting.

Count me in! Whenever and where ever, I can get the whole 9 days off. Also happy to help with anything else where needed.

I'm in Canberra and can take another person if someone does need a lift from surrounding area too.

Been doing a bit of research for locations with all my spare time, After speaking to a few locals (friends) I am looking at an area in the North East of Victoria which I am told (by friends that hunt there) holds good Sambar deer numbers so It's a bit closer for the interstate people, this will also ensure good fishing also for those that want a break from stalking. This area is closed to deer hunting with hounds all year round, nothing worse than arriving at you hunting destination only to find it covered in fresh dog tracks.
As previously stated I will check the area out first to make sure we are in a decent area and not wasting our time.

I am also thinking of June / July as there is a known population of Red deer within a half hour drive of the intended camp and June / July is the Red deer season in vic.

Cheers
