Some thoughts on the tabloid media

#1 Post by looseplucker » Thu Apr 02, 2009 12:23 pm

Recently I have been watching, Andrew Bolt, Piers Akerman and their ilk shrilly denouncing Helen Liu (a friend of a Government minister) - and trying to draw a very long bow indeed about her being Chinese and security issues. They seem to have all forgotten some fundamental issues - like the truth, and how ironic it can be, as the following demonstrates.

Helen Liu is an Australian citizen - OK, she spends time abroad. Plenty of Aussie businesspeople do that. She is the friend of a politician - actually she's friends with them on both sides. No biggie - she is a successful businessperson- can she influence policy? Unlikely.

Rupert Murdoch - who owns the Daily Tele, Herald Sun etc, on the other hand, has a massive amount of power through his media empire. Can he influence policy and Government - you bet your sweet cheeks he can - and he does - in Australia, UK and the USA.

Is he an Australian citizen? No. But Bolt, Akerman- their boss renounced his Australian citizenship in order to be able to expand his empire. Does anyone else have an issue with someone thumbing their nose at their Aussie birthright, renouncing it, becoming a foreign citizen, and then having such an influence over Australian government and politics?

Something for the BBQ this weekend.
Are you well informed or is your news limited?

In the view of the Administrators the posts following John's original above had become acrimonious. Therefore we have removed them so the thread can recommence in a reasonable manner.

I think the administrators should grow up. Adults can have discussions with strong diverse opinions without them being 'acrimonious' and further through that discussion they learn and sometimes change their perspective. Without that continued discussion they remain entrenched in a point of view and then they are more likely to become divisive and antagonistic.
I know this is an archery forum but 'shooting the breeze' is just that and it deepens the relationships and often the respect and understanding between members. A difference in opinion does not necessarily mean conflict and openness and honesty and diversity does not mean insult and certainly does not require censorship.

I stopped buying and reading newsprint the day after I realised that the truth does not sell papers and sensationalism does......I was 19 at the time. ....34 years ago.
I do however find ABC National radio keeps me informed.
I also watch ABC news.

Anyone selling papers or advertising to my mind is a practised professional liar and so not worth listening to.

Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!

Ozbow Administration's right of reply to Jape
A difference in opinion does not necessarily mean conflict and openness and honesty and diversity does not mean insult and certainly does not require censorship.
Jape,

Your last sentence is an interesting take on how the thread was running.

We took the action we did precisely because it had degenerated into personal conflict and acrimony even if you cannot see that. When a thread degenerates to the point where the antagonists resort to publicly calling the personal integrity of each other into question is acrimony however you like to view it. Very little of what was debated among the posters was advancing Looseplucker's thesis in any direction and was hardly a matter of mere difference of opinion, openness, honest and diversity of opinion as you term it.

Whether Len's comments were racist or not is not a matter for you to publicly accuse him of without leaving yourself and the administrators of Ozbow as publishers of your comments open to libel. As we understand the law, Ozbow is as open to the libel laws of this land as much as you or anyone else if it can be shown that what it publishes brings the public reputation of another person into disrepute.

To accuse someone publicly of being a racist is a very serious accusation, and not something which we as administrators are prepared to tolerate or expose ourselves and Ozbow to no matter how it may be dressed up as openness, honest and diversity of opinion. At the very least, it well exceeds the bounds of common civility. There are other ways you could have addressed Len's comments other than to flatly accuse him personally of racism. There is a Racial Vilification Act in Victoria, and it is not your place to take that law into your own hands.

Robust debate is does not include anything approaching libel and Ozbow is not prepared to be the 'fall guy' for your antagonism towards Len. You and he are both grownups and can sort out your personal differences in private without using this forum.

The thread now appears to be following pretty much along its original intended course. We hope it will continue that way.

The ABC does infact present the most professional news reporting but generally only reports one side of the story. I've been a long time listener of 774 but the trouble is if you only watch/listen to the ABC here in Vic you would believe the health system is not too bad, public transport is being sorted by the minister, Melbourne won't face power shortages or water shortages etc.You have to read the tabloids to find out what is actually going on or else you can be very misinformed to the real state of affairs.
Hmmmmmmm.............

It is pretty damn obvious that the moderators of this site are a minority in their tight assed and repressive attitudes 'dressed up' as moral and legal behaviour. Racism is just that, immoral and illegal and that is why the comments were questioned openly, because I am not afraid to address it publicly. If you were going to censor it should have been done at the beginning and not of me. You don't really show balance, you pretend fairness and in fact what you display is your own bigotry and prejudice disguised as moderation.

Nev, I am indeed a proud Leftist, and wear that like a medal! But I'm no Greeny the way we see Greenies here. But Nev, I gotta tell ya, I see it the exact opposite way to you. From my perspective, you only need to do the smallest amount of research to be able to refute most, if not all that Bolt claims. For Petes sake, the man quotes Bjorn Lombok for evidence of his views on Global Warming as if Lombok has any credibility amongst Climate Scientists! He's a bloody economist whos funding for research was supplied by Oil Companies, under the guise of P.R companies ( check out the "Chevron Group" for one example)! This is the quality of what Bolt comes up with, junk scientists with no or very little credibility amongst their peers! He's just a corporate and conservative mouthpiece for hire, nothing more, nothing less. There are plenty on the other side (the likes of Philip Adams, for instance), and I read very little of them either.
Anyone can find someone to back their ideas, Nev, no matter how nuts. The challenge is to allow the facts and general consensus amongst REPUTABLE scientists or academics recognised by a majority of their peers guide you, even if you have a political bias, or opinion. Which I openly confess to.
I respect your view, Nev. I take notice of what you write because you may teach me something ( I imagine I would learn TONS from you about hunting, and native animals in your area). I just have my own view based on my own experience of life, that's all, mate.

As for media, your right Len, you can't just rely on the ABC. I try not to read too much that's just from Australia, though. I mostly try to read the international press to get a rounded, balanced vision of the world.
On Climate Change matters New Scientist is good while waiting for, and riding on, a bus. Your informed, but not so heavily you lose an hour because need to sit and think on it a while, y'know?
I believe people come before profit , and it's just common sense that if you keep pumping carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and other chemicals into the atmosphere eventually your gonna pay for it, so I guess that makes me a "Lefty" hey?
Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!

I was glad to see on the ABC TV this afternoon, that Doctor Samuel Johnson from his dictionary left out the word 'banknote' but he did include the word retromingent - 'organized so as to discharge the urine backward'.

Yeah, I saw that. SBS can be very good, too. Dateline has some of the best quality Journalism on Australian T.V. I reckon.

As for the original subject of this post... I'm more concerned that Mr. Rudd had the Chinese minister (or secretary) for "Propaganda & Ideology" which is a very Orwellian, scary name for a Govt. Dept., over to his office for a meeting last week! The thing is, the Chinese press were welcomed to take pics and ask questions, but Australian press were not even informed the event would happen until after it did! Even then the P.Ms Dept didn't want to talk about it at all, and very grudgingly admitted it. That worries me much more than anything to do with Joel Fitzgibbon and Helen Lui, I tell ya!
It's not that they are Chinese, or Communistsor even Socialists. (they are not by any definition of Socialist I understand. They are just common Totalitarians disguised as Socialists, just as Stalin was) but that our Govt. didn't want us to know about it! Plenty of things happen Govt's decide we don't need to know about, but a visit from a foreign dignitary? They usually fall all over themselves to present press conferences and photo ops! Could they be a little spooked by all the Anti-China hysteria we hear on talkback radio and read in tabloid papers?
Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!
