Re: gloves or finger tab.
i prefer a tab. i like to feel my fingers on my face at anchor. i cut my own out of kangaroo hide. any leather about 3mm thick will be fine. cheap too. obviously the rough flesh side goes to your fingers. smooth side to the string.

Re: gloves or finger tab.
I had a tab but then moved to glove, i found the glove more comfortable, nothing major just a personal preference. It might be best to try them both to see which one you like.

Tab. It's a personal preference thing.

I don't use anything but i am only shooting 45# a dozen or so at a time. I have a tab and don't get on with it so would use gloves if I had to.
Re: gloves or finger tab.
Tab for me ,, I used to use a glove for years , then thought I would try a tab . Cut one of my wife's shoes up and made a great Tab I feel I shoot better with it and wouldnt go back to a glove . Much easier to feel the arrow when nocking it ,, and no where near as sweaty as the glove . Try both and see what suits you

Tab for me, but it is important to have one that fits well and is secure.

Re: gloves or finger tab.
thanks guys thats excellent.
i have been making both from old riggers gloves a and found gloves more comfortable, but perhaps not as accurate. probably because of the location of the seem at the ends of the fingers. i'm not sure. i will try an old pair of work boots.
i have found i can't as yet get the right design or shape with the tabs to get a good fit and comfortable. i will perservere.
i was hoping most of you said tabs, as a glove would be very hot up here, though being a victorian in the cape i don't know it would matter much. i could wear a bikini and still sweat my ring off... no i haven't tried that.

Hi Otis, try a Black widow tab, they take a bit of shooting in though.

thanks steve,
i'll be honest though, and say maybe, as i like making things and using things i make. but if i do not succeed i will go the widow.

Re: gloves or finger tab.
yeah riggers gloves won't give a clean release because of the seams on the ends of the fingers. you'll see the difference in design when you see a shooting glove.

Re: gloves or finger tab.
I started off using a cheap tab many years ago when I was just a kid and then when I had some money, I decided to try using a glove, like I'd seen all the 'experts' in the archery magazines using. I used a variety of gloves for many years and then for an experiment, I thought I give using a tab another try. I actually found the tab much more convenient to use. It gives me a better feel of the arrow, as I can feel the nock between my fingers. A tab gives me a better feel of my anchor point when I'm at full draw, as there's no leather between your skin. A tab is much more convenient to wear if you're doing anything that requires the use of your fingers, like tying your shoe lace for example. Tabs are much cooler to wear on hot days. Generally good tabs are cheaper than good gloves and being smaller and lighter, it's easier and more convenient to carry one or two spares. I usually tie a spare tab to my quiver.
I prefer tabs without the finger spacers. I quite often make my own tabs. Usually I like to use the thick hide from a kangaroo's tail. The short stiff fur against the string makes for a smooth release and they last for ages.

There is no use focusing on aiming if you don't execute the shot well enough to hit what your are aiming at.
Re: gloves or finger tab.
mick i'd love to see a pic of your home made releases. or anyone elses for that matter.

Re: gloves or finger tab.
doesn't get any simplier.
this side to string
the back. i actually glued another piece on the back just yesterday to thicken it up a bit. comfortable, clean release and the price is right. and it's something else you can hunt with knowing you made it.

Re: gloves or finger tab.
I too think it is personal choice but I prefer a deer skin glove. They last a long time, don't groove and are thin enough that you can still feel the string etc through them.
Clinton, do you use a metal nocking point on your string?

Re: gloves or finger tab.
Target, clout, field for AA comp, I use a TAB
For trad speedshooting I am practicising with deerskin gloves and backquiver.
CONFESSION
I now use a plastic Saunders tab.....does not wear out, very smooth/silky and works when wet and does not fall off the finger, get too tight nor need adjustment. I added a hard thick leather ridge. It comes as a composite kit that you can add extra layers. It is reversible. With the spacer and smooth one single skin I have stopped getting any hard calouses at all.
It took a while getting used to it as it felt too thin at 49# but boy you can really feel the release but not get hung up being conscious of the release which is disastrous.....of all aspects the release has to be totaly sub-conscious in nature IMO.

I prefer a glove, mainly use a Damascus glove from 3 Rivers. Very thin with plenty of feel.

Re: gloves or finger tab.
Otis,
As you can see, it is pretty much of a personal choice. There aren't any hard and fast rules so long as your choice gives you a clean loose.
My first choice is for bare fingers which I can use quite well on bows into the 60lbs range (when I used to be able to draw them), and after that, a Damascus style glove because they are very thin but very durable with good feel and THEY DON"T GROOVE.
Anything from Kangaroo skin is excellent in all the above respects if you can get it.
