Where On Earth Is Latvia?

#1 Post by erron » Sat Oct 25, 2003 1:06 pm

My job might be sending me to Latvia for a few weeks. Anyone know anything about it? Any of you guys from Europe?

I've been told it's too cold to hunt much, or go outside. Doesn't sound great...

I believe it's on the Baltic. It's about the size of some of your sheep stations. :D On go on, a little snow never hurt anyone... hehe... at least you won't have to worry about critters that poison or bite you... except maybe the women... did I say that out loud?

Richard and Lindsay, thanks for the references!

The software I'm testing over the next few months is produced in Latvia: benefits of working for a multinational, globalization corperation :o So It's going to be a good idea to make sure the producers of the software unit test it before it comes to us, I guess is managements thinking.

The Lonely Planet has this to say:
Latvia toes a most-un-Alpine line in being the small, flat and largely boggy meat in the sandwich between its Baltic neighbours - Estonia and Lithuania.
'nuff said, I reckon!

Erron,

I know someone who's family comes from Latvia. She has been back to visit a couple of times in the last few years. I have browsed through a few picture-type books of the country at her house.

From what I recall there are some beautiful places in Latvia. I would be on the plane tomorrow if someone would pay for me to go. I do recall whilst reading the books seeing some photos of game - deer from memory. I reckon the hunting possibilities would be well worth researching if you are going to be there for a few weeks.

Need someone to carry your bags?

Thanks Mark,

that's encouraging, and I must say the Lonely Planet DID mention some beautiful old castles...

Guess I'll have to wait and see whether they send me, and check out the weather if they do. I would think it's pretty cold at this time of the year :?:

- , nah, but if you get down to Vic any time, look me up and we'll have a hunt!

Cheers,

Not the first place on my list to visit but hey, I would go around the block given the time and resources!
When are you looking at going (being sent!) over?
Your mission - find a trad bowmaker in Latvia! Now that would be a conversation piece at the next shoot: "Oh this bow? yeah picked it up in Latvia!"

Lindsay, some time in the next 3 months, I would hazard a guess, if it does happen.

And yes, wouldn't that be great, bringing a bow back from there! 8)

Rain? What's that?
Actually where I am we have been lucky - been a few nights with a shower or two - but today it was up in the 30s. Roll on summer!

Erron,

I could probably give you some info on Latvia and the capital Riga, as in
where to go and what to do. Been there several times and my brother-in-law lives there.

Drop me a pm if you're interested.

What a great opportunity! History plus. And meet Count Dracula in person! (Remember to take your sharpened stake-wood shafts).

Count Dracula
Dracula was few hundred km SE (Walachia and Transylvania). Latvia is on the Baltic. (Prussian Knights and Crusades)

And we all know that Riga hosted Eurovision the other year.

Bingo, got it in one. That is not well known.

My understanding is Riga is one of the most complete Medieval cities in europe.

Riga sounds interesting, if your company is based there Erron you should be able to get a decent tour of the place.

Hey barking, thanks for the offer anyway  I didn't have to make the trip, as it turned out. The really amazing thing is that 3 years have shot past since I first posted this  I'd forgotten how long Ozbow had been in existence, not to mention the usual shock of 'how time flies' etc.

Cheers to all,

Erron
