Bowhunters that build their own Broadheads.

General discussions. Politics, scuttlebutt, whatever: you're getting married, changing jobs, got a gripe or a compliment, dying to get out with the bow etc.....

Bowhunters that build their own Broadheads.

#1 Post by Bill » Mon Aug 06, 2018 7:46 pm

As a lot of you may be aware my passion in retirement is collecting Broadheads.
My main interest is in Australian Broadheads and their History.
I currently have a register of fifty one Amateur and Professional Broadhead manufactures.

So I am very interested in finding out as to how many Bowhunters have designed, built and are hunting with their own Broadheads.
We know of a number of bowhunters that have turned a passion into a profession in advancing and building their designed Broadhead.

Here is a small list of some of the old team that built a broadhead or two.
Huntsman by Alan Strachun, Shooting Star by Alan Woodward, Blackstump by Steve Carruthers, Davies by Allen Davies, Barry Johnson heads, Doug's Drop'ems by Doug Dupille, RibTec by Col Groaham, and the Col Weatherstone head.
These are just a very small number of past Broadhead makers.
There are a lot of up and coming new heads out there these days. So good on them for having a go.

But there must be others that have had a go at designing and building a broadhead that not everyone has seen.
For I have a small number in my collection that have been well made BUT don't have a name or any information as to WHO built them.
So come on I would like to see what you have designed, built and used during your hunting trips out in the bush.

If you don't wish to say or tell your story here, please send me an email at meekwg@southernphone.com.au
Or text or phone me on 0458084493, I would very much like to hear about your head and its story.

But please don't forget to show some pictures or a drawing of your head.

Ok, thanks. Bill :Bow

Well done Gazza, a man after my own heart.
Here is a picture of mine built from metal cutting bandsaw blade.
Along with several others made over the last forty plus years.
Thanks for showing as tom said awesome.
Along with a few of the old timers from the past.
Enjoy. Thanks. Bill.

Nice work Bill and Gazza. I have had a piece of 1" x 1/8" 1085 carbon steel for about 5 years that I have been meaning to make some trade points from. I am going to drill some holes adjacent the shaft (2 each side) so I can bind it right at the tip and in the middle as well as around the haft behind the point.

I know this doesn't help, but I do have all the right intentions Bill   :D So many things to do and so little time....

Cheers, Rod

G'day Rod,
These are a few of different size, weight and thickness tie-on blades that I have made over the years.
Because of their cheapness and ease of production, they were mainly used on small game, but I admit, a few were kept as back-up on pigs.(the bigger blade)
ok, Bill.

Where have Rod and Gazza gone.

No follow up stories or information from either of them.

I hope the 2020 Covid -19 lock down hasn't struck.

Anyone know.

There was a time when I couldn't get ahold of, or make a round 5 degree taper ferrule to manufacture a Broadhead.

So I invented  the square 5 degree ferrule.
It worked a treat, with any shape blade, just what ever I felt like shaping at the time.
I could sharpen them to single or double bevel, left or right wing along with any type of shoulder.
For the extra weight if needed, I just melted lead or solder down the ferrule.
To reduce the weight I drilled some holes.

I have traded sixty or more to other collectors in New Zealand and America.
Being a product of Archery/Bowhunting :Bow at the time they were alot of fun.

Hello Gazza,

The wide blade heads tended to want to fly their own path unless they were weighted a bit heavier with the lead down the ferrule only best for up close shots.
As for sharpness and penetration no problems.

They were made from the steel banding straps off the steel bundles from a local Steel Merchant.

The best of the lot (my favorite) was the four-blade head, narrow and needle-sharp point, but not to pointy ending-up folding on contact with anything. (except stone) Not a great number of these were made due to the jigging requirements when silver soldering the blades into place.
But very easy to sharpen as for single side, at an angle one side then flat on the other, getting that final burr off.

They all did their job back then, some better than others on the goats, rabbits, and fox's, but never got the chance to try on any pigs that were in the area.

Ok, enough of that, how's the new kayak going, giving you the chance to get out and get some me time fishing.
Are you on the lakes, down a river or on the ocean open waters catching them?

Cheers.
