What Pens best for writing on Bow??

#1 Post by Muz1970 » Tue Aug 11, 2015 7:48 am

Have tried Sharpie type ink pens but when applying wipe on poly it removes the writing.

Think I'll try a fine nibbed paint marker

What does everyone else use?????

What poundage is the bow, and what's your "draw" length?
Very important to consider these things, you'll want to match the spine of your pen to suit.
Personally I prefer 3 fletch pens for this purpose.

If you just want black or even blue then for that I use a Pilot C. D marker . I do the inscription and let bow sit before applying finish, It's not bad.

G'day Muz, I use a white paint marker called 'Uni PX-21 Paint Marker White'. I got it from Officeworks and the smallest it comes in is 1.2mm nib. It cost me around $4.00 and works very well on fibreglass. Just make sure you clean the fibreglass first where you intend on writing or it won't stick.

Hey Muz, I use "uni-ball Signo" water based gel/paint pens which are the only ones I've found that don't run when you apply solvent based coatings. Don't know how well they would go with a wipe on finish though, I think it would rub off. But they do come in a good range of colours.

Cheers, Rob.

I use wipe on poly too and the only thing I have found that doesn't wipe of is, go to an art store and buy a bottle of white ink, it will be with the india ink and a nib pen like they use for calligraphy, just the cheap one with the wood handle and replaceable nibs. Use that and let it dry and the wipe on wont touch it.

Something I have seen work well is write on paper and then lam it in. The paper goes clear. That way you can mess up the writing a heap of times and just chuck it rather than have to clean the bow.

I was wondering if any has tried using DECAdry rub on lettering as this can be coated with a spray lacquer; bear in mind to test the lacquer that you have to ensure that it doesn't melt the DECAdry lettering. I use it on guitar necks for some of the electric guitars that I have made for customers who wanted to personalize their instrument.
There is a large range of different fonts available.
