Bow explosion, another hard lesson

General discussions. Politics, scuttlebutt, whatever: you're getting married, changing jobs, got a gripe or a compliment, dying to get out with the bow etc.....

Bow explosion, another hard lesson

#1 Post by Old Soul » Sun Feb 01, 2015 4:36 pm

I think there is something wrong with me, today I learned yet another hard lesson in the world of self bow making, another bow explosion. So many hours of work destroyed in a fraction of a second and already I am thinking of the next stave and how I will make it. I think after today’s efforts I have destroyed more stave’s than I have successfully completed but I can't stop. All I wanted to do was make a bow I can hunt with but it seems to have turned into something more. Now I am enjoying a couple of Captain Morgan rums and venting my disappointment. The next one will the one.........

welcome to the world of bow making, an addiction for which there is no cure.It just gets worse until it becomes an obsession.I feel the pain, but am sure you will get a positive result.

Do you keep the good half of the Broken Bows Old Sole, Splice them together, retiller and you got another opportunity to learn from each Broken Bow

Bad news but I have had the same thing happen too many times to keep count.

Most times I have found that there was a flaw such as drying cracks or shakes in the timber but they did not become evident untill the limbs were loaded up.

Red ash can be prone to the above problems and I have also had similar problems with larger milled boards of hard rock maple and hickory.

Yes, it is addictive but it is good for brain stimulation.

Yes I remember those days of self bow attempts and having them brake on me. That's one of the reasons I went to recurves and longbows with fibreglass. That and it was getting extremely expensive to keep buying staves. lol

Hey guys, it is comforting to know it is not just me breaking good wood. There were a number of decisions along the way that led to the demise of this particular bit of wood, strangely it was kind of a relief when it broke as I was always just trying to salvage it and new that as soon as I had finished it would start on the next one as it would not have been to my satisfaction.

Rob, thankfully it is not the bow you are thinking of, that one is still doing very well it is just that because it is so humid at the moment the sinew and hide glue backing is just a little sluggish.

Now Bjorn I am deffinately up for a get together. I have to say though I am with Rod on the Bourbon thing but I am sure that is something that we can work around.

Rod since you have been kind enough to offer your place as a gathering point name some days that will work and lets try to put it together. I generally get two weekends a month off, the only issue is knowing which ones they will be. I do have this coming weekend off!!

Sounds good, maybe we could do the Sunday morning shoot at the club on Vico Rd and then retire to my place for a few, let me know if that works for you guys and I'll try and round up a couple of other trad fella's and budding bowyers.
