Trad archery bling.

Is there such a thing in trad archery? I reckon there certainly is. Actually, I think that many trad archers love their bling. You only have to look at the fancy arrows that many of us shoot at trad events. They're far fancier than they need to be, so, in my opinion, there's no other name for it. What about the clothes that many trad archers wear? There's often a lot of bling to be seen there too.

Of course, the real bling starts when you start looking at the bows. Many of them are supreme examples of the bowyers art form and if that's not bling, I don't know what is.

IMO, there's nothing at all wrong with displaying a bit of bling. I'm often guilty of it myself. I love checking out the impeccable arrows and the incredible bows that are bound to be in profusion where ever trad archers meet. The clothes that many trad archers wear definitely adds to the atmosphere of any trad shoot too.

Hi Mick,

Is the following what you mean? if so definitely not me.

Daryl.

From Wiki; "Bling (or bling-bling) is a slang term popularized in hip hop culture, referring to flashy, ostentatious or elaborate jewellery and ornamented accessories that are carried, worn or installed, such as cell phones or tooth caps."

The term 'bling' has come to mean something slightly different to the above interpretation in Australia these days, I believe. The term is used to describe just about anything that is 'flash' or ostentatious that may (or may not) impress like minded devotees and/or admirers. We, here in Australia (or at least, down this way in Victoria) tend to use the word with a certain amount of sarcasm and a sense of fun, I believe. Check out the link In my original post. It gives a far more accurate interpretation of the word than the Wiki one does, especially in the more modern context.

Personally Roadie, I mentally included you in the ranks of the 'blingers', when I first thought about how this term might be used in our context. I have seen you dressed resplendently on several occasions. In my view, it was certainly 'bling' that you were wearing. No offence mate. I hope I'm not being too derogatory when I say that. You certainly looked impressive.

It's a term that's commonly used in fishing enthusiasts circles and forum sites, when anyone buys themselves a ridiculously expensive new reel or anything that's obviously a bit flasher than the norm. I looks as though the terminology hasn't made it into mainstream trad archery just yet, for some at least.

That's OK Mick, its good to see you back, I thought I might have seen you at the Geelong Masters a couple of weeks ago. Cheers Roadie.

Hi Roadie. In retrospect, I would have liked to have competed in the Geelong Masters, but I just wasn't organised enough at the time. I didn't have any leave from work organised and I was out of practice. Did you have to be a member of any archery association to attend the Masters?

I was happily surprised to find that my form and accuracy has come back quite easily. Hopefully, my tendency towards having target panic will now be behind me, after my break from archery. I haven't noticed any tendencies of wanting to snap shoot in my practice sessions so far, which is good.

No doubt we will catch up at a trad shoot somewhere in Victoria next year. 8)

Terminology is a local coloquealism, the macquarie dictionary "the aussie one used by all government bodies etc etc"

bling
/blɪŋ/ (say bling)

noun Colloquial showy jewellery, especially when worn in large quantity.
Also, bling-bling. [US bling flashy, ostentatious, ? from blinger an extreme example of its kind; popularised by US rap singer BG in the song Bling Bling (1999)]

Bibliography: The Macquarie Dictionary Online © Macquarie Dictionary Publishers Pty Ltd.

I do know what you mean though, pretty quivers etc, i'm guilty for sure.

Mick, I did check your link, these were some of the interpretations,

Insecure retards way of trying to get attention.

Any shiny thing which distracts morons such as rappers.

Refers to good quality cocaine, the shine/sparkle in cocaine. Also slang for crack cocaine

Jewelry of the hip hop culture

Cheap, Tacky, "Real Gold, init", Jewelry worn by townies.

Gaudy over the top hideous and wholly unnecessary.

A piece or pieces of jewelry that are worn to enlarge the person's ego.

When the sun light illuminates my silver locks I do not hear 'bling' so maybe I am ok or I am left right out.

to me bling really just means adornments, so i guess that includes fancy metal finger guards or thumb rings (which i don't own... yet)
interesting to consider beautiful equipment bling, and i guess not everyone is into it but i love the idea of having nice looking arrows to loose

but for some reason i have a hard time calling a bow bling, perhaps if it was covered in gold? bling might just mean shiny/metallic to me
like, a gangster doesn't refer to his "9 mille" as bling, i guess unless it's been blinged up.

it's like calling great artwork bling, i just think it's too specific of a word to use instead of just beautiful

Alright fellas, I know when I'm beat. The trouble is, it means different things to different people. A bit like semi-recurves in a way.

I hope that nobody took offence to my ramblings. You all look beautiful to me.

I like checking out the bling at trad shoots, whether its a nice set of arrows, or someone's bow. I'm even guilty of having one of sue's teddy bears on my quiver.

Even though 'bling' is a type of modern slang, i think it does relate to what TRAD shoots are all about. Everyone showing off their newest work whether it's a new knife, arrows, bow, leather work etc. All these things contribute to the atmosphere that i love being around.

Roadie, what would you call wearing a cape trimmed with arctic fox with the head as a hat, the tail on the quiver a fancy walking stick and clothes with thousands of metal rings and heavy leather belts with big knives?

Love seeing people wearing classy well worn leather gear they or a mate made especially from leather harvested using a bow.

My rig is all hand made, not the best but I did it myself. Only piece of bling is a small hand struck medallion in brass that I got in Austria. I value it more than any other archery keepsake and it is attached to my hip quiver.

Reggie Bohler has some of her gold medals embedded into her hand made timber bow stand..with feathers, now that is classy bling.

Yep, I'm guilty. Definitely of the 'bling' arrows (mine were once described as 'arrow porn'). And probably slightly fancy bows too - which will get worse since I just ordered a Blacktail Snakebit and a Blackbrook Sigma. Quite like a nice armguard too.

I know both Nathan and Guy are 'Bow Magpies' who decorate their homes with bows. That's blingy.

Not sure I would describe Roadie's attire as 'bling'. A rather disturbing fetish might be closer eh

At Wiseman's Sue and Steve Wallace also showcased some interesting headgear.

Oh yes, my girlfriend, who is new to this archery lark, will probably be sporting the equivalent of BDSM equipment - a niche, but I think, welcome addition to Trad archery bling. She wants a studded black or pink leather quiver, armguard and bow handle. Who am I to argue!

where is she going to find the studs?

Ask Steve Farrell to borrow the pretty pink armguard of shame.
