broke me brand new arra

#1 Post by texx » Fri May 17, 2013 4:50 pm

yep suppose its some thing i will have to get used to but this one was just me not being real smart at all , ah well i learnt some thing else today .
i bought a nice new set of wallace woods on wednesday , then yesterday to help keep them in good order i made a case to keep them in and hope fully stop them getting knocked around to much ( see case below ) anyway i took them and the new bow home today for the maiden voyage for both arrow and bow and set up a couple of straw bales for a target fired all 6 arrows all good but they did go a lot further into the bales than i would of liked walked up pulled out the arrows and very next shot went wide only a few inches in from the end of the bale ( they are a lot softer on the ends ) the arrow went straight through and i hear a clang walk over and here against the ironbark tree about 6 mtrs behind the target is the belly plate off my dozer a good 1/2 thick solid steel plate that a wood shaft is no match for .
so i am not happy at all in that i should of forseen the problem and moved the plate or found a better spot for the target , i also should have a better target , anyway after i cursed my self for a while i fired a few more shots but my heart now was not in it at all and some of the arrows were going in up to the fletching so i called off the rest of the target work .seems to of snapped the arrow off just behind the brass point might have a look tomorrow for the point .

On the bright side?

1 You have the opportunity to splice/foot the shaft and repair the arrow,

2. You have had a lesson regarding butts and backstops.

From experience Easton X10's also do not not like hitting steel and footed shafts always seem to attract other footed shaft! Mumble..... mumble

Shame about the arrow, are these arrows expensive?

Welcome to the world of Wooden Arrows, as Ned Kelly was supposed to have said before the trap door was opened " Such is Life". Next time make sure there are no metal objects to rearrange the wood work.
But in saying that you can hit hidden objects out Hunting. Cheers Roadie.

hey Texx
Commiserations on da arrows!

I know this is hindsisight but....... practice with da ordinary arrows and shoot da boodiful ones on special occasions or in comps.
The upside is you will quickly learn to hit the target with boodiful arrows or become painstakingly poor with a second mortgage to pay for more arras.

ah yeah good idea but what if you dont have a heap of arrows to choose from cos you are just getting started .i do have 6 very rough arrows that i threw together myself for the selfbow i made a year or so ago but they are the roughest arrows on the planet and fletched wrong and not even worth using to test out the new bow.

Sorry to hear Johno. As you have found out, hay bales aren't good as a target back stop.

these little ones i have at home are'nt jeff but the ones down on the farm where i used to work were plenty good enough at 8'x4'x4' lucerne stacked 4 high and tipping the scales at about 850kg's each they made great targets i used to shove iced coffee container under one of the strings about chest high and the arrows only went inot those bales 3 or 4 inches . might have to go down to the lucerne farm just to practice .

Shame about the arrow mate.

Another option for a target is a box or chaff back or such stuffed with rags.

I use a cardboard box well stuffed with old clothes etc (remove any zips/buttons) and wrap in duct tape to stop the box getting too soggy.

Seems to stop even broad heads from a #50 recurve reasonably well so far.

Hi Texx, I use cane mulch bales $12.00 each from the local hardware. I buy 1/2 a doz at a time and can shoot hundreds of arrows into them before they start to give way. Then the mulch goes on the garden. You can buy more and set them up wide and high to give a large target, 2 deep also if your shooting heavy bow. I shoot 45# and arrows go in 1/2 way. Also they dont harm the arrows at all and remove very easily.
