Know any good movies/series?

#1 Post by longbow steve » Sat Apr 06, 2013 5:11 pm

Recently watched- Mongul (story about Ghengis Khan) was good and worth getting out.
The Hunter or Hunter with William Defoe hunting the last Tassie Tiger. Not a bad movie with good scenery and some good generated vision of a Tassie Tiger.
Series- The Walking Dead is awesome, anyone else watching it?
Lastly-Deadwood series from a few years back was recommended to me and was fantastic. Lots of swearing etc for those easily offended.
Can anyone recommend some more worthwhile movies/series? Thanks Steve

I quite like the Game of Thrones series available on DVD but think it runs on pay TV. Set in a mythological medieval Europe with supernatural beings like white walkers etc.

Also liked the "Mongol" movie!, also thought it was a shame the "The Walking Dead" had a crossbow instead of a nice trad bow!. For a great archery movie , check out "War Of The Arrows", its a Korean movie with a great plot too,. For a all-out war movie it's another Korean one "Brotherhood of War", massive scenes!

As a series "The Wire" from a few years ago. The first four series were the best I've seen for a long while. The fifth wasn't as good. Definitely not for the easily offended.

All the movies that I'd recommend come from a LONG time ago. Anything in Kurosawa's samurai genre is good, but particularly "The Seven Samurai" and "Throne of Blood."

Deadwood was awesome.
+1 Game of thrones, I love it to death.
'The Sopranos' was great, there's about 5 seasons if you haven't seen it already.
'Rome' was really great.
If you like doco's, Wonders of the solar system/the universe/life with Brian Cox are great.
I've seen 5 eps of the new show 'Vikings', loving that.
Flight of the Conchords is pretty good if you like a laugh..
I thought season 1 of 'True Blood' was good, but then it went way waaaay downhill.

There is a few glimpses of Trad bows in the 3rd season of The Walking Dead but yes it would have been good to see.

Hi Steve.

It depends on what you like.

For a Series have you seen "The West Wing"? May not be to everyones taste.

For a movies have you seen.

"The Last of the Mohicans." The recent (15 or so years ago) with Daniel Day Lewis.

What about "Black Robe" or "The Mission".

How long a list would you like? And how far back are you willing to go?

If you are interested in the US Civil War the a good double is "Gods and Generals" followed by "Gettysburg".

As a another double "Zulu Dawn" followed by "Zulu".

If you have a partial interest to the US War of Independence you should try "The Patriot".

If you want Classics try the "Matlese Falcon" if you have not seen it or "Casablanca" or "Key Largo". Or you could just work your way through all of Errol Flynn's movies.

If you want something that is Medieval you could try "KIngdom of Heaven" or "The Crusades" by Cecil B. DeMille.

Have you seen "Patton"?

There are a lot of movies out there. It is highly dependant on your taste and interests.

If you really want some TV Series it is more of how much time do you have? Have you seen "Robin of Sherwood"? How about "Cadfael". Whilst I am more than happy to watch TV Series that are dubbed or sub-titled some people are not.
Grahame.

Movie - The Usual Suspects. - Series - Poirot, Miss Marple, Mrs Bradley Mysteries, Murdoch Mysteries - the older based murder mysteries.

All the Robin Hood movies, some being better than others.

The series Robin of Sherwood 1 and 2 (1 was better)

cheers
sue

not bad a list for someone that doesn't watch much tv.

I am a bit of a film buff so the list would be loooong ....

but as a starter for some films that many may not have exposure to , off the top of my head
The Life Aquatic
The King of Comedy
Dersu Uzala
13 Assassins

I have really enjoyed the Walking Dead series , having been a fan of the graphic novels ... i bought it for my wife ... and she exclaimed "you bought me a series about Zombiez ?" ... but now loves it.
Game of Thrones is fantastic ... but the books are better
Deadwood is stellar television ... superb
Rome was fantastic
Justified looks really promising but I am only into the first few episodes
The Wire is enthralling , clever and gripping
The Shield is far more than it makes out to be ... great TV
The European version of "the Killing" is brilliant too but subtitled if that bothers anyone .....

Some good suggestions there Ben. Yes a list could go forever.

Had forgotten about 13 Assassins. Excellent!

The Walking Dead I have enjoyed but holding out until the DVD's drop in price before purchasing season 2. (have not watched yet)

Can't wait for World War Z.

The Game of Thrones - fantastic book series (check out the song "Rage of Thrones" (explicit but funny)) only watched season 1 so far.
very much looking forward to the next book.

Very funny British comedy series' "The IT Crowd" and "Black Books"

The Missouri Breaks - excellent western starring Marlon Brando and Jack Nicolson.

Blade Runner - still the best Sci-fi movie ever made. Always worth a re-watch. Followed by the original Alien this movie just blew me away as a teenager. While I have generally always enjoyed Star Wars it is not in my top ten of Sci-Fi. Light Sabres though are really one of the coolest things of all time.

The Good The Bad The Weird. actually the Koreans make some damn fine movies.

Anything with strong themes of instant justice is always good. Rio Bravo, El Dorado, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider and the brilliant Unforgiven.

Kenneth Brannah's - Henry V

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgaZ85nZuRA I know Band of Brothers speech gets a lot of air but this speech is one of the best of Shakespeare I reckon. Who would not surrender to that "Dread King"

Finally - watch Titanic. It will make everything else you watch after it seem good.

Cheers

So good.

And yes Gladiator. So good. And how good was the sound track hey?

And Troy did a good job of bringing the Iliad to life. Although I think Achillies was painted in a better light than what the Greeks thought of him. Admired for his prowess but Hector was held in higher regard for honour and courage.

Hell, I wish they would make a movie of Hannibal.

That's Hannibal the great general, not the cannibal.

There is a game available based on the series but I have been told that it is not worth playing.
