Torn Tendon in wrist

#1 Post by Ian Turner » Wed Mar 20, 2013 8:45 pm

Hi guys for those of you who were at Rob McKenzie's and expressed concern re what happened to my hand I now know its a partially torn tendon which may put me out of archery, trad bows anyhow for about 6 to 8 weeks and will probably have to start with lightish bows and build up from there but I have to go see a hand specialist to get the full story. BUGGER!
I love my archery and all the good people I have met.
So I guess I am down for a bit but fortunately not out (i hope) and may even have to turn to the DARK SIDE, (compounds with release aids) for a while (yes Roadie my friend hoping to be all good by August).
I guess also a message I want to get across to all is if you feel something strange and or sudden pain in your hand/ wrist stop shooting straight away and get it checked else you may end up like me or worse.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone else out there who has had the same or a similar problem and th recovery path taken and the end result.
Cheers
Ian

Ian, this is not good news.
DARK Side, now come on, listen to your Councillor. I think a lighter poundage bow (Trad) is the way to go.
Take it easy and look after that Hand. Cheers Roadie.

Best wishes and a speedy recovery Ian

Once your repaired properly its worth seeing a physio to get the exercises to rebuild
your strength. IMO there are bad physios and good physios out there, I usually find one that
works with AFL footballers, they have to be good. You may be able just ask them for the excercise program,
rather than pay for numerous visits.

The secret to recovery is rest, don't do what I did and do things that stress the area too soon. I actually partially torn ligaments in my shoulder and elbow and tried to do normal workload and blew out the recovery time.

Not good news at all Ian. All the very best with your recovery. Oh, and stay away from those machines mate and shoot a lighter weight real (Trad) bow to build up your strength again when the time comes.

Be really carfull when it comes to physio's, I had one tell me my ankle was just sprained and he could fix it, when in reality I had detached two ligiments and needed a reconstruction. I also had another tell me that I only had soft tissue injuries to my shoulder when my collar bone was broken.

Don't be afraid to get a second opinion.

Hi Ian,

What a shame mate... You were defiantly in a bad way when I saw you...

Have you considered shooting left handed...? I know of a few people that have and are quite accomplished at it... just a thought...!

Cheers Guy...
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is no where as important as being able to place it in the correct spot....!

Hi guys,
Thanks very much for the advice and good wishes and thoughts they are much appreciated.
My wife is miffed cause I can't do all the work she had planned for me!!(i am gonna milk that for all its worth).
I am going to see an orthopaedic surgeon I think on wednesday and will get the full picture from her then.
Guy as to shooting left handed (i am doing everything else left handed at the moment) I was thinking of trying it but I have a torn and retracted tendon in that shoulder but funny thing is my doctor is amazed at the use I have of that arm and shoulder with that injury.
Dont know how I did it but I know it happened years ago.
Thanks again guys and I hope to be shooting again soon and looking forward heaps to going to Rob McKenzies again and catching up with everyone. Rob knows I love his place and all you trad guys!!.
And Kerry that is mighty good of you to offer to lend me those limbs; might have to take you up on the offer.
Cheers
Ian

Hi all,
Been back to the xray people and had another scan and thenback to the doctor and all seems OK now with the wrist?
I had some shots with one of my 40# recurves, some what tentatively at first and as such my form was terrible but I seem to have pulled up OK so hopefully, usinf lightish bows I am back into archery again.
Cheers everyone.
