Importing feathers

#1 Post by Fraser » Wed Mar 20, 2013 11:57 am

Hi All, I was just looking at the first bird bamboo eBay site, they have varrious feathers for sale, turkey, goose etc. My question is any one tried to import feathers from China before, and could you get them through customs?

I bought some bamboo shafts and some buffalo horn slivers for self nocks from China and they got through OK. I got a separate bill from some customs agent for processing it (~$20) and it was held up quite a while but it got through all the same. Its not feathers but I would think horn would be in a similar category - or maybe not  .

Cheers....... Rod

Good Day Fraser,
Small numbers- a couple of 100 may make it through- depending on
the luck factor.
Feathers from China may require the quarantine spray so just be aware.
Regards

Thanks John, looks like they're going to be uneconomical unless they drop there price, white goose 100rw $38 + $25 postage + $? For customs to spray. $55 for 100 full length true flight feathers is looking better all the time.

Around $100 for 50 full length feathers including standard postage but remember they are generally a slightly longer feather as well.

They may cost more however one is for Goose feathers and other is for Turkey feathers. Goose feathers are nice - especially if it rains, For me it would depend just how much the price differential turns out to be.

I may try them, I'd like to give goose feathers a go, I'll see what the auction price gets too.

I've ordered the feathers, guess I'll see if they get through customs alright. It'll be interesting to see how they compare to turkey feathers. The ones in the picture where a full 12" of feather, if they're all like that it'll be a pleasant change from stunted turkey feathers. Going to have to make a jig for grinding feathers now.

I got the feathers in the mail today, took 10 days from China, no customs problems. They range in feather length between 10" & 12", about 7" to 9" of usable feather. Just have to make a feather jig now.

Just stuck one under the tap, they're quite water resistant. They act like a turkey feather that's just been sprayed with water proofer. Hope they stay that way and reduce in water resistance over time.
