The baltic sea....

#1 Post by g_r » Fri May 04, 2012 9:19 am

Hi there,

havent been on here much lately, mostly its been due to alot of work and other issues, but ive been away a few days also.
With my girldriend a few other friends weve been at the shores of the baltic sea for a few days. Not quite the holiday i normally like, we had a rented cottage in a quite cicvilized place (too civilized for me! ) but it was quite nice.
Havent been shooting my bow during this short holiday but at least been able to do some fishing and look at some bows.
Anyways, less words - more pics:

The nearby cliff coast:

Me heading out in search of slimey creatures:

As i was fishing alone most of time and didnt want to carry a camera in the water i dont have no pics from the fish i caught, it were some cod, one seatrout and several flounder. They were no records but enough to make a decent barbecue for 7 people.

A fish i didnt catch:

Nearby was the museum of Haithabu. Haithabu was once the most important trading place for Vikings and Norsemen from Scandinavia, Russia, Europe and the British Isles.
They are continually rebuilding the place as a outdoor museum.

Found a bowyer and had to look closer

Original Viking era plastic nocks

He was shooting a quite strange style and didnt have a solid anchor or the like....
He didnt want to let me shoot, wich i could understand as my 30,5" draw would have probably broken his selfbow.

Its always good to end with a sundowner...

Thanks for looking,
Axel

P.S. My girlfriend got a new camera and i think shes doing quite fine (if you overlook some strange angles on the horizon  ). All pics were taken by her.

Good Morning.

Good to see those Norse Plastic nocks are spreading worldwide.

On a serious point though - if you are hand making your arrows, full bind etc. A split nock can be bit annoying. It does not make for a good day.

When you are feeling keen try making some horn nocks - another method to fill up those free weekends when you have nothing to do.

Very nice pics of the area and very interested to see that you visited Haithabu (Hedeby).

That bow which the local bowyer is using is not at all like those in the article published in "Neue Ausgrabungen in Haithabu; Band 33: Das archäologische Fundmaterial VI" by Geibig, A. and Paulsen, H., 1998 (ISBN 352901933X) entitled "Pfeil und Bogen in Haithabu (Arrows and bows in Hedeby)".

I have attached a copy of the article in PDF format for anybody interested. It is an English language translation to which I have added some corrections of the terms which go against archery convention.

Interesting article Dennis, thanks!

The "reenactors" At Haithabu Museum arent paid professionals. As far as i know everyone who is known to have a decent authentic gear and some knowledge to show can move in there for a week if he is approved and play his role there.
Thats why not everything thats shown there is absolutely authentic and some reenactors even might have dubious skills...
A friend of mine was there when a reenacting women failed to start a fire with flint and steel and then pulled a barbecue-starter and a gas-lighter out of her pocket

Its a wild mixture, we dont know excactly but its said the father was a Rottweiler mixed with a Bernese cattle dog and the mother was a german shepperd mixed with a Lab. But because of the hair and some characteristics we think there might also be some Collie in it......
