For the last couple of weeks i've be walk passed a plant growing in a log near my back door area, and i kept hearing the cracking sound that a snake makes, and i would try to see what sort it was with on luck, i hread the sound again had a look and i could see part of a large black coloured body, are it's alright Red belly blacksnake, well court a bit of movement out of the corner of my eye, and only about haft a meter from my face was this big brown head we were eye balling each other ok move away slowly, yelled out to the wife to ring the snake man it was a large Easten black brown snake. For our overseas OZbowens there the second most poisonous snake in the world, and he wasn't going to live at my back door any more.

Poor old Joe Blake, very misunderstood creatures.
Having said that, I don't think he would have lasted very long around my place. I would have done the same as you Keith and had him removed!

What's to misunderstand Mort? If I accidentally walk on or upset one of them they are likely to bite me and that bite could make me extremely ill or kill me. So I hate the things and don't want them anywhere near my place.Moreton wrote:Poor old Joe Blake, very misunderstood creatures.

Re: Unwanted Guest
No, I wasn't aiming that at what you said... I know what you mean, and I get the creeps over them for the very same reasons. I just meant in general. Some folk think they are deliberately nasty, but they are just doing what snakes do, that's all I meant. In the right place ( far out in the bush) I admire them and think they are fine, but like you I won't have them around my house.Stickbow Hunter wrote:What's to misunderstand Mort? Re: Unwanted Guest
Many years ago a I had a mate who was really into snakes and used to catch them for the venom , he used to go around to peoples houses and remove snakes for them , he loved snakes but he used to say if a snake was in the bush leave it alone but if it was around the house and you had children or animals get rid of it , call some one like him if you could but if not work on the idea that if in doubt blow it's ring out , he used to reckoned the only safe way of dealing with a snake if you weren't used to them was to use rat shot or a shotgun depending on the position of the snake , he reckoned that was why god made the .410 [ direct quote from him ] , he always reckoned that the most dangerous thing that people could do with a snake was go after them with a shovel , rake or a broom , which are of course the most common things people use ,
Lots of older people I know had a way of dealing with snakes inside the house where they didn't want to shoot into walls and such , they would throw a saucepan of boiling water on the snake to bring it out in the open then belt the **** out of it
Personally I dislike them intensely , I consider them to be ugly bloody things , I've never been bitten but it's been close a number of times , I don't mind carpet snakes and black headed pythons but won't have the rest around the house or the shed , I leave them alone in the bush but around the house and shed in a no , no , back years ago I didn't like them in the outhouse either , back when I was a kid there was some thing unsettling sitting there on the crapper with a kero lamp and a 10 ft carpet snake just above your head , I would want to get out of there so fast it's a wonder I didn't bust a valve
In the shed I put down naphthalene to discourage rats mice and snakes , which tend to appear after wet weather , mate always reckoned that a Brown snake cleaned up rats and mice better than a carpet snake but my storage area is 2 metres wide with wide shelves down each side which doesn't leave a lot a lot of room to move , personally I'd rather put up with rats and mice , at least then I can still get in and out of the storage area

Snakes are magificent Creatures, just beautifull
Having said that when I was 15 I stood on a Fierce Snake, / Inland Tiapan. It struck me, my Hunting Mate said I jumped backwards over a Saltbush I had just stepped around and that in a blink of an Eye - Lets just say I delt with the situation with the tools at hand, my Bear Grizzly and a Copperhead Broadhead, sort of fitting. You might say my adrelalin was up !!!!!!!
Upon inspection for the Bite Sight one Fang had penetrated the Vietnam Era Jungle Fatigue trousers I was wearing and struck the Vietnam Era Canvas Boots I was wearing 1/2" an inch from the Top, a small droplet of Venom was present. The other Fang failed to penetrate the Fatigues - we where 5 hours walk from the Car - I am a blessed Man.
I have had more encounters with Eastern Browns than I care to remember, I guess Assertive is one word for them. Just be alert and give em a wide Berth.
regards Jacko
