As far as I know, just be a member of an Approved Hunting Organisation, like the ABA, or a shooting club, etc. One of our southerners may be able to fill you in more, or correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Jesse,

You must be a member of an AHO (Approved Hunting Organisation) -such as the ABA. This is to provide insurance to both yourself and others whilst hunting.
You then need sit a R license exam - it comes in 3 flavours : bow, gun and dogs.

Where abouts are you?
At Bensons Archery in Granville, Sydney you can do the exam and join an AHO they have set up.
Cheers,
Andy.

ABA will require you too pass a proficency test with your Bow of choice, best to talk to an ABA Bowhunting rep for the full details. ABA will cost you over $100 initially

Here's a link to all ABA clubs and you should be able to navigate your way around it to find out more info

Sporting Shooters last time I checked do not have a jioning fee and cost about the same as ABA to renew. Have a poke about there website

Best bet for a quick answer may be - Australian Hunting Net is likely to have plenty of folks with all the R licence answers. There has been lots of Rlicene questions I've seen on it, do a search. There's the odd Bowhunter on it and they have a Bowhunting Forum

SSAA does not require you to do a proficiency certificate. I waited 9 months for the ABA to be available to do the exam with them, but gave up and went with SSAA.
I was still a member of the ABA (have since joined SSAA) but was able to pay 20 bucks and do it at the local SSAA club house.
