See ya's next Friday!
Ok fellas, I'm off to Texas in the morning to try my luck on pigs.I Have been getting pretty good news about the numbers out there so I might just get lucky. Even if I don't manage to bring something down I'll still enjoy just being there!
Wish me luck, I'll let ya's know how it went next Friday. Of course, I'll have a heap of pics to show.

Hey Moreton, I won't say it, but go and enjoy with the best of an Aussie tradition.

Re: See ya's next Friday!
Hey boys, just got back...no good, but not for want of trying! I still have a lot to learn, that's for sure.
Bit buggered now after the drive home, but I'll write about the trip later on.

"There's always next time!" (motto of the philosophical bowhunter).
Did you get any photos of the countryside and so-forth?
Glad you had fun anyway.
Cheers,
Ben

Yeah, always next time, Ben. Might go alone for a change, see what it's like to hunt/camp solo. Anyway, here's some pics, sorry there is no shots of game, but I had a few camera problems on the first two days, got it fixed on the last day we were there.

Re: See ya's next Friday!
Thanks for the photos Craig but they are a bit big mate. It is preferable to make them 800 pixel wide and you have them 1600.
It sure looks like there was some grass around so I guess the game was spread out a bit. It's not the best huntin' when there is bang sticks around either. All the best for next time.
Jeff

Re: See ya's next Friday!
There you go, Jeff, fixed 'em up mate. I'm not very well informed on photo editing and just assumed that if I made them 200kb that would make them the right size. Apparently I have a lot to learn about photos too!
There was quite a few pigs around, I suppose we saw about 20-25 over three days, and they didn't vacate the area when we first arrived and busted a group on the dam at 1:00 in the arvo! Monday was a very dark, overcast, drizzly rain sort of day out there and I'm told they will stay out later on days like that. These ones just ran away into the bush. We saw others later that day, right on dusk, which had come out of the next door property but whether they were the same ones I couldn't say. One lot came quite close to camp on the second night, crossing a flat area near the dam at about 8:00pm. Dave and my uncle who owns the place thought that strange. Uncle Ron says he rarely goes down that part of the property and doesn't let hunters on, excepting us now, of course. So maybe they didn't see us as a threat enough to move on? I don't know enough to comment, really. He rang me today to say they were on that dam again this morning. Do they usually hang about one area? I've always been told they only move through areas.
It certainly is a great spot to camp, Ben, that made it worth the drive to be there!

Re: See ya's next Friday!
Hi Craig, If the pigs are dependant on a water source or have plenty of feed in the area they will stay unless really pressured. What I find beneficial is to see what they are bedding down in ie Saltbush, tussocks, blackberries, bracken fern and check out these areas. You can confirm thier presence by fresh poo and turned over areas. You can also follow the poo as they generally do it on the move and the pointy end is the way they were facing at the time so if it fresh be on the lookout.
Finding a good hunting partner is a challenge, Jeffro and I are effectively lone hunters and just stay in touch by radio but when it is time to sit around the fire you need to be able to have fun and that is a given when Jeff brings his FLAGON of PORT .
Get out there again, figure out what hunting is near to home and get into it, I have been making a concerted effort to get out more in the last 12 months and am learning heaps about different species and coming across some really impressive animals . Steve

Re: See ya's next Friday!
Thanks Steve, it's good to get advice from those that know. I'm certain that if given the chance...I'll blow it anyway! I have a lot to learn about hunting with the bow, but I have a couple of places reasonably close to home to try now. I want to go back out to this place within the next month-6 weeks and give it another go.
Here's a few more photos, of the marks left behind by one of the second pigs we saw that came out of the neighboring place ( when my mate shot as soon as he saw them). , the next door property they came from and ran back into the top of a gully I though may be worth trying to whistle foxes from next time , the part of the dam where we saw pigs as we arrived and this one just because I like it, our fire.
