a nice little skinner.

#1 Post by clinton miller » Sat May 29, 2010 5:36 pm

last sunday i started knapping a blade from a piece of mahogany obsidian and i finished it through the week. i also played around with a piece of buffulo horn to use for a handle. today i hafted the blade to the handle with pine pitch and sinew and made a little sheath from kangaroo hide that i tanned myself with wattle bark. it is stitched with sinew.
it's primitive throughout!

a nice little project comes to an end.......it's now waiting to skin something.

Clinton,

Mate, it looks fantastic...!

You are definitely getting knapping down to a fine art...!

I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with next....

Cheers Guy :D
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is no where as important as being able to place it in the correct spot....!

clinton i love your work. buff horn is so nice to work, and it almost looks too neat and smooth for the blade. you seem to have great control with the knapping.

two questions.
do you punch your stitching holes before stitching? what with?
are you going to put a more secure strap on it?

Hi Clinton,

Well done. Your knapping skills look first class.

If the knife loses its edge during usage can it be re knapped and if so can it be done more than once?

Cheers,

otis- i'll try it the way it is. if it proves to come undone i'll change it.
i just drilled these hole with a small drill at high speed. i usually use a special tool to punch stitching holes but dad has that in his leather working kit back home in stanthorpe.

greybeard- yes, you can sharpen them. simply re abrade the edge and reflake the it again. there will be a point where it gets too thick and some major thinning would have to be done. it will wear out in time but it will give me great satisfaction long before then. it could live on as an arrow point maybe??
