this is the most beautiful broadhead i've made so far

#1 Post by clinton miller » Sat Apr 24, 2010 7:24 pm

thanks to the rock.
this is a point i came up with this arvo. it's made from obsidian. i cheated a bit with this one. it's from a really thin flake. all i did was shape it, put an edge on it and notch it.

hopefully one day it will go through the lungs of a pig, goat or deer.

Great job, Clint!
It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

That's a nice broadhead Clint. It's looks too pretty to shoot though mate. The colours look fantastic. It's also very symetrical. You're getting very good at this knapping business.

no such thing as cheating, I'm sure thats what paleolithic hunters did. I believe all flakes were used, if not for an arrow or spear head then as a cutter or scraper.

muntries- your exactly right, they did. you don't have to cover both sides of a piece with pretty flake scars for it to be functionable

infact i've got some big spalls that only need a series of flakes on one edge for them to be a very functionable skinning tool. no handle, just a rock that cuts!

i know what i'm making tomorrow now.

That is absolutely beautiful. It is an amazing :!: :!: thing you have done with that lump of rock, however I can't help but think of the awesomeness of the guy upstairs who put those minerals together in that piece of rock all those years ago.

Beautiful head mate!!

Im just starting out in flint knapping myself. Have been playing around with porcelain tiles and bottle glass so far, I wouldn't want to risk wrecking a nice piece of obsidian like that just yet.

This is my very first attempt using glass...

Came out of but I think a lot of it was luck. I'm having trouble getting my head around platforms, where and at what angle to hit/flake and also sending thinning flakes.

Any tips would be very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Colin

Nice work Colin, looks like it would do the job to me. Do you know how much it weighs? With a bit of practice you'll be making functional art like Clinton's OP in no time.

Cheers.... Rod

Thanks Rod,

It weighs 110gr so its a fine point weight.

Lots of practice to go yet I think.
