a little primitive knife

#1 Post by clinton miller » Fri Apr 23, 2010 6:13 pm

hey guys i just finished my 1st stone knife.
it's made from a rock called dacite found in the USA. a guy off the primitive archer site traded me some rock for some shark and roo leather i had.

the blade is about 3" long, not huge but i'm stoked at having made my 1st stone knife. i hafted it to a piece of whitetail antler the guy sent me. i used some pine pitch and sinew to haft it. the pine pitch and sinew i made/harvested myself.

looking forward to putting it to use.

it's quite stiff.
the pitch is great stuff. it's not gooey like some of the resin you see coming from pine trees.

it's very easy to make. just gather some pine resin from the wounds of a pine tree. it needs to be the hard stuff. it will be 'glassly' and shatter as such.

get some dry manure of some kind, i used cow manure. grind it up really fine. i bought a small mortar and pestle for this. get some charcoal and do the same.

put the resin in some sort of tin and put over a slow heat. when it's melted add the manure and charcoal. just add it till it bulks up a bit you still want it to be runny while molten. this gives it a bit of flexibility, making the resin less brittle. then you need to add some bees wax to the molten resin. add little bits at a time. dip a piece of tie wire in it and let it cool and then flex it, if it fractures and shatters like glass you need to add more wax.

hafting points is my kind of aromatherapy! smells......piney!

not sure yet. i just put a clicker on my bow and i had to cut some bowfishing line. went through that okay.

if it gets dull it's just a matter of taking another series of small flakes to create a sharp edge again.
