3 Today..New Pic one done...

#1 Post by kimall » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:06 pm

I made these three today in the new coal forge and love using it alot more than the gas forge.I tried to get a bit smart and was working on 2 at the same time with one on the anvil under the hammer and one in the coals and then swaping but the little forge got a bit hot under the collar and burnt the tip off one of the blades. So this one got trimmed up and is now part of a his and hers set that I was wanting to make. The other large one is going to be a raffle prize at the Gladstone Trad shoot so if you are keen on one get to the shoot and buy heaps of raffle tickets to support the club.
Now the fun bit picking the wood for the handles I found a bit of stuff in the shed today I thought was all gone so these should come up real nice if I do my part.
Cheers KIM

Three in one day is a good effort for making blades. Well done.

Sorry mate not to respond Rod but I am moving house at the moment so it is all way out of hand here at the moment. I took 3 trailer loads from the shed today and it only touched the surface jees I have some stuff in there. All the machinery is gone, toomorrow the rest I hope.
So to answer your question I got my coal from BBQ's Galore a BBQ shop here in town.It was not real dear and the bag is about 10 kg I think and it has lasted a fair while now.IT is made from gum so burns nice and hot and has a real nice smell too.
The knife you just got looks real nice so now I wont have to make you one but you should still buy lots of tickets.
I may be a bit hit and miss on here the next week or two as everything gets moved but will try to check in when I can.
Cheers KIM

Heat treated and tempered today so will glue up some wood toomorrow for the handles and cut some buff horn as well. They all survived the heat treat ok with no cracks or warping and are taking shape real nice.I did learn something today though the smell of burnt old motor oil takes a while to get out of the kitchen oven AND not everyone thinks it smells nice in the kitchen. 8) I hope to have some pics a bit later in the week when I get some handles on as I did some file work that I think looks ok too.Gee it is sooooo good to be back in the shed.

Yeah you're right, that purple shines up real nice. It would probably look good with a light/white wood on top. Maybe ash or elm. I wonder what osage orange would look like on top of it??
