Bearing down....

#1 Post by kimall » Thu Dec 31, 2009 6:02 pm

I was given some roller bearings ages ago to try in the forge as they are a very good knife steel but can be a bity tricky to work so I have been avoiding them a bit.
Anyway I got a bit inspired this week and its amazing what comes out of the little dragon sometimes.I had no idea that there would be enough steel in one of these to make a full size knife but after about 4 hours,a swollen forarm and a lot of sweat I got this......

A little update for those interested.I finished the blade on the w/end and heattreated and tempered it and LOVE the results. It is the sharpest thing I have ever made and I am not finished sharpening yet I just had to see how the heattreat had gone.I did a little file work on the back first and it looks ok too I think(flames because it is forged). Here are a couple of pics more to come when the handle goes on.

Kim, not to downplay your sweat and effort involved but I would love just a smidgeon of your talent (oh and some of your secrets of course) Can't wait to see more updates and the finished product.

Thanks guys for the comments I still need to work more on the final finishing of my knives after seeing others on here(ST)but I just love playing around with this type of stuff and the edge on this number is very nice.C.Nocks I have no secrets mate if you think I have something worth knowing in me just ask and I will try to help. :D
Rod I was thinking a nice piece of MDF or chipboard.(Thats what I told the new owner and he was not that happy). :P
No I have a piece of Burl here that should if cut right be just big enough to do the job and should suit the overall design of the knife. Thanks again for the support........

With a "flame job" and some lacquer would look cool, as a safe queen .........

The company who works out a good "flame job" with either Micarta or G-10 is going to make a mint.

An outstanding result. Well done on maintaining the stamina to beat out that bearing. I love the shape of the blade. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Thanks again for the comments guys. When I move house in a few weeks(I have finally bought one) I will have all the gear set up full time so if guys want to come and have a go then there will be a place. It is not hard I mean I can do it and in a couple of days it would be no probs to make a blade yourself and that would really mean something to most I think.

orsum work kimall. Great matching unit with the handle and forged finish on the blade. Love the overall shape and flame work on the back too. Great inspiration to the rest of us..if only I had more time :lol
Keep it up.
