Hi guys only just found this forum, looking forward to going through it and looking at all the great stuff.
One question straight off the bat, if I want to make a knife out of a Nicholsons file, are they 1095 steel.

Old ones are supposed to be 1095.
Australian Whiltshire files are supposed to be 1095 or W2.
Best advice - Buy a piece of steel and use the file to make the knife.
