Hand Forged
I have not done any forging for a while as I have had some other projects but got into it last night and today.I had some steel cable to try that someone sent me(Thanks again mate)
so decided to make a little pig sticker for a guy at tafe.He is taking me to his pig property in return..It turned out not to bad but still has some inclusions in it where it did not weld properly but the blades I am forging are getting better and better all the time.It will be fine for the intended job. Then I had a play with a railway spike and made a tomahawk head which I am very happy with.
Cheers KIM

Re: Hand Forged
Great stuff mate! I am busting to learn how to forge one day. Its been a long time interest of mine...
Re: Hand Forged
Love the tomahawk idea. Are you planning on attaching it by tying it on? And how long is the sticker?

Re: Hand Forged
Interesting work. Are you going to split the spike so you can fit a hawk handle?

I am going to put a hole through the head toomorrow if it works out I dont have the proper drift but I will work something out I think. The blade on the sticker is about 7 inches.

Re: Hand Forged
7" you say...what would be the minimum for a knife to be able to hit vitals in a big boar?

Re: Hand Forged
7" is plenty in the right place... (and i'm talking about knives and pigs)

Re: Hand Forged
Here is the finished pic of the hawk until I can get a handle it is the first time I have tried to make one of these and I had to make a drift first to make the hole so am real happy with the result.

PS I have decided to make another knife for him as I just cant let one go out with inclusions in the blade even if it is sound so will make him one out of normal carbon steel later in the week.I know nothing about making pig stickers to be honest so any advice is good.

Hay Kim
The hawk looks deadly, do you think that cable is going to make a decent knife.

Re: Hand Forged
That hawk looks really nice, trying to get a little forge going outside, need some sort of makeshift bellows though
Just need some RR spikes.

Re: Hand Forged
Heres an idea for you Toby, when the lady of the house is not looking grab the vacuum cleaner and use the exhaust from it in place of bellows or if you cant get away with that find one in the dump. Not very trad but very effective..... Rod
