I am at it again....New pics of Etching
I have put my damascus making on hold for the time being but wanted to make a Damascus chef knif for my Nephew as he has just finished his trade and not long turned 21.So I bought a piece of steel from a forge in the US and it arrived Friday.
I have drawn up a design I like with the features he asked for and have glued up some really nice timer for the handle.I seem to be a bit edgy about starting the grinding though. I think it can happen when you can buy a small Korean made car for the same price as this bit of steel. Anyhow here are a couple of pics before I go ahead and destroy it.........Cheers KIM
PS Over 400 layers with a mixture of 4 differant steels

Re: I am at it again....
Yer coach HT is no probs its all carbon steel so the same as I normally do it will be fine.Mabey use peanut oil instead of old engine oil on this one though.

Re: I am at it again....
I got into the knife this week after making a wood model to get the shape I liked before grinding away the precious metal. It is 23cm blade length with a flat grind from the edge to the spine overall length 33cm.
This is just after the 60 grit belt so doesnt look much at the moment. You cant see from this pic but the most work was thinning the blade down as it goes toward the tip as the chefs like a fine point section on their knives.

So far so good , looking forward to seeing it finished and etched
Re: I am at it again....
A little up date for those interested here is a pic of the blade sanded down to a 600 grit and it is now ready for heat treating so I took the pic as it may be the last time it is straight and in one piece.i have never heat treaded a blade as long and thin as this and damascus so fingers crossed.

Well it was good then bad and now good again and now I need a drink. It didn't crack when put into the hydraulic oil so that was good and didn't bend so that was good but when I cut the PVC pipe to make the dunk tube I left some plastic swarf in then tube that was floating around in the oil so when the red hot blade went it the plastic stuck to the blade in a big blob right in the middle of the blade.2 hours of sanding and I was back on track but I nearly cried when I turned the blade over and first saw the stain. The tempering went OK in the oven and I just etched it and love the results. It is hard to photo with the flash so I will do some better pics in the day light but I am over the moon it is at this stage and going to have a drink to celebrate.

You've done brilliantly Kim! You should be very proud of yourself. Well done!
Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!

Beautiful work. I like the way you matched the grain pattern of the handle to the shape, well done Kim.

The finishing touches and it is delivery time.
I made a timber cover for each knife.
