First Knife

#1 Post by TEX » Mon Jan 19, 2009 11:02 am

Had a go at making a knife over the break.
I was limited on material and tools so be kind.
The steel is 440 stainless. Unfortunately the piece of steel had a small cut mark in it so I had to work around it.

Nice work TEX, i love the top edge grind, is it false or fully sharpened?

Also, what grind did you do on it?

Thanks,
Carl

Thanks Hillbilly.
It's a false edge. Not sure what you mean about grind.

Looks great :)

How did you harden it?

I didn't heat treat the blade. Although it has a shaving sharp edge at the moment I am not sure how long it will last.
This is more of a test knife for shape rather than for using out in the field. The knife is quite heavy. If you have any ideas on how to harden stainless steel I would love to hear.

Hardening stainless isn't rocket science but it requires some equipment that can be expensive for a hobbiest. Your best bet is to send it to Hills Heat treating in Melbourne

IMO

I would take the handle off it.

Drill a number of holes in the tang, it will help with the weight.

Take the edge off it.

Send it to Hills and get it heat treated professionally ( Not more than $14.00 + reply postage)

Wait for 2 weeks for it to come back.

Put the handle on again.

Sharpen it .

And you would have a good looking knife (from the photos)

Thanks Stewart
I couldn't get onto your photo bucket photos.
I think it's my end that is the problem.
I have a new knife cut out ready to shape at the moment. I will get it hardened if it turns out OK.
it will be another stainless steel one with a different handle design.
