Where can I get...

#1 Post by yeoman » Sun Feb 10, 2008 10:51 am

Hi all,

I'm looking for some spring steel. Not just springy steel, or steel that's tempered to be a little elastic, but ridgey-didge spring steel, ala leaf spring. However, I only want about 4mm thick.

I know where I can get 5mm, but that's just that little bit too thick, and requires all that much more grinding.

I'm after barstock about 50mm wide or more and 1200-1300mm long.

Oh yeah, just to bge really picky, somewhere in Melbourne would be just gravy too.

Don't worry, I have googled and let my fingers do the walking, but there's very little that I can find.

Cheers,

Dave

Dave

Way back when I did once use a spring out of a B&D Roll-A-Door. One heating to get it soft and then another to re-temper it.

If you are thinking of a blade there is someone in Adelaide I think who gets blades profile cut and I think the place that does them is in Melbourne.

Will do a bit of a search.

It is possible you might find what you want at some automotive wrecking yard - they should still have some vehicles with leaf springs - or in Melbourne, there should be some spring specialists who service the automotive industry by making and/or resetting automotive springs.

Keith Spencer at Knives Australia (http://www.knivesaustralia.com.au/supplies.html ) used to supply various carbon steels including some spring steels. They no longer have them listed but you could see if he can direct you to some suitable supplier.

Hi, try talking to Bohler or Sandvik steel sales on Greens Rd in'Dandy'

They sell stock steel bar which should suit your needs.

Cheers.

There's a magazine called 'Knives Australia" at newsagents. You'll find all you need in it.
Lately, if life were treating me any better, I'd be suspicious of it's motives!
