Drop Points
Okay, newbie confession: I've never skun anything bigger than a fox! And that was a few years back!
So, a question for the experienced: I keep hearing how important the drop point on a knife is for larger game. Just how important is it, in your opinion?
cheers,
Erron

I have done a fair bit of skinning things over the years and for me it helps a hell of a lot. I simply use the full working curve when tight against the inner skin. AI have used Puma's, Shrades, Gerbers to name a few but most of these weren't drop points so they felt a little clumsy to me. One of my hunting partners can handle the smallest Shrade (I think it is called deer skiner) anyway non drop point with absolute authority, the knife just suits him. I am no expert either by the way.

Erron,
yeah....thats going to be stag for the handle, with copper bolster and pins.
Blade will be D2 tool steel (either 1/8" or 3/16" stock).... the flats will be left rough (giving a rustic look)... while the grinds will be hand-rubbed satin finish.
Leather 3/4 length pouch for the sheath
im planning to make a couple of variations ...... including using various woods instead of the stag
.....Ive just finished profiling one in 1/8" stock
