Old to new...

#1 Post by hunterguy1991 » Wed Jul 08, 2015 10:01 am

Hi all,

Just wanted to show you a knife I made a couple months back. Have become quite interested in most things medieval recently and keen to expand my skill set somewhat, so I decided to have a crack at a medieval dagger. Using an old buggered file, I first annealed the thing so I could actually work it with the tools I have here.

Got the shape nice and then gave it a good polish to remove the file marks before it was hardened. Being tool steel it is oil hardening so I used canola oil for the quench. After hardening the blade was then tempered for 2, 1 hour cycles, to get a straw colour on the blade ( mid 50's Rockwell).

Once the blade was done I started on the handle. It is red Ironbark made with a Japanese style hidden half- tang (if un glued could be dis-assembled) with brass ricasso and end cap.

Nice little dagger, Colin nothing better then making it yourself to appreciate what work goes into them. What wood did you youse for the handle. Altogether a neat little instrument.
Dont know what the rules are for a double sided knife these days I think it may depend what state your in?

Excellent ! I'm sure there is no problem owning a Double Edged Blade in Queensland, just importing them. Colin I enjoyed catching up with you at the Abbey. Very impressed with what I saw . Look forward to seeing your next Project

Colin, nice job mate on the knife. The handle looks pretty good too.

Cheers guys,

Wayno the handle is red ironbark. Thought the colour would go nice with the brass and it seemed to.

Thanks Perry, was great to catch up in person and talk archery. Hope to see you around the shoots in future and at the next abbey. Maybe even team up and work on a bow to get it shooting. I never got to touch mine in the end unfortunately, but that was expected.
