Good morning all,

So between the new group we have up here in FNQ and upcoming shoots I'm hoping to get to I'm needing a set of throwing knives and a tomohawk for the axe throwing events.

I'd like to keep them "traditional" looking if possible and of good quality.

Have been looking at the cold steel norseman and fransica axes.

What does everyone use and why? Pictures would be great

Regards

Bjorn

You will have to check the rules first mate as there are often rules about axe shape and knife length. For example in ABA shoots fransican style axes are not allowed. I use a modified cold steel frontier hawk and I like it very much and both my kids are cub champions with the same axe. As far as knives go I made the one we use, bigger is better as small knives spin to much, you want a big heavy lazy knife that only wants to spin once at 3m.

Thanks Dan,

There isn't much information for this considering how strong this segment is at trad shoots.

What makes the fransica not legal for ABA?

Just read the rules and there is nothing that excludes the Franciscan over any other axe.

Axe must be:
- single primary edge with a easily definable primary blade
- less than 100mm cutting edge
- not be a half or full axe.

So if a fransisca had an edge of less than 100mm then all is good for ABA.

I don't know if it's still the case but the up swept design of the head on fransicans was not allowed. The top point of the cutting edge couldn't be more than an inch higher than top of the back if that makes sense. You draw a straight line across the top head at right angles to the handle and if the top point is more than an inch over that line than it was out. Thats why nobody uses those gill hiben axes. Don't quote me though as i haven't done an ABA throw for a long time. If in doubt it is usually up to the discretion of the organiser.

looking through the current rules on the ABA site i can't see that rule any longer. i guess i'll take one down and if need be argue the pony that its not in the rules. :)

or i'll just use something else.

thanks for the help

Mate not sure if you want to buy Aussie or not but if not, Google www.shrewbows.com as he has some awesome hawks and trad knives all very original looking.

I know it is an old topic but these are good value from Cleaver firearms. Mine has taken a lot of punishment since I epoxied the handle into the head. Had to trim the blade down a bit too because it was 1/4" to wide for ABA rules.
