A Knife made by my Russian friend.........

#1 Post by mikaluger » Mon Jul 21, 2014 10:15 pm

As some you know, I am a member of the ABA (Australian Blacksmiths association) located here in Melbourne in which I am very much an avid learner. Recently I met a gentleman there that had made an exceptional damascus knife from steel cable. I offered him a deal. A bow for one of his knives. He said In a thick russian accent "No Problem".............
I supplied the Deer antler. Steel is A1 tool steel. Alex and I will be hand forging some more Damascus Cable in the near future.
His Name is Alex Tokmakov. This is his THIRD knife. The guy is a freak.
I will make sheath shortly. I am very happy.
It even has my initials hand cut in brass and copper......................

Dash it, just got a stag-handled bowie, can't afford another ... very nice work your mate, worth encouraging. Good to see he can work fine as well as heavy and design imaginatively too.

Nice looking knife, though can't see the Damascus layering in your knife. Is the steel A1 or O1? I've made a few from O1 which is an oil hardenable tool steel. Only problem with it is its very susceptible to oxidization especially from finger marks.Still a damn fine knife though especially given the small amount he's made.Great stuff!

That's why I couldn't see the damascus folding!   One 12'' Bowie i made , after i hardened it but not tempered i whacked a bit of RHS with it and it cut the steel but never marked the blade edge.I would have hated to try putting a cutting edge on it though if I never tempered it later. Looking forward to you posting some shots later of your Damascus work. I never got around to making one, though being a boily in my working life had the where withall to do so.
