Knives made from old files.........New pics!

#1 Post by mikaluger » Sat May 11, 2013 3:36 pm

I have wanted to have a go at making a knife for awhile now, and as my son is also interested, we had a look on the net and thought we would have a go at making some knives from old files. My father was an engineer and my father in law is a hoarder of old tools, so between them, we found a heap of old flat files. The files are very high in carbon so they make a fine blade, so we annealed a couple of files in the open fire over night, last weekend and today spent a few hrs shaping, filing, and grinding.
We have these ready for the hardening and tempering process. Just have to get my forge fired up in the next week or so. Handles will be next.

Not sure about the handles mate. I have wenge, jarrah, american ash even some Hickory with a splash of grey through it, just to name a few. I'll find something laying around!

Did a little more today, I have been busy making bows of late, things have taken off a bit!
Managed to glue some wenge scales on, tomorrow I will do some shaping. Hardened and tempered the blades a couple of weeks ago at the forge.
